Our flight commander hosted a tie-cutting party last night, and we all got our call-signs. Mine is ROOTS. Here's the story:

I usually dye my hair darker in the winter because blonde (my natural color) actually looks kind of weird on me. People usually think I lighten my hair in the summer, when really it's the other way around and the dye has just faded by summertime. So, around the same time we hit the flightline, I dyed my hair a dark auburn. But, now my hair is really short (no long hair with ejection seats) and the blonde roots started showing a lot more than usual and it looked pretty bad. So I tried to dye out the red, which only ended up making the roots really blonde and made the rest of it a strawberry blonde color. So then I tried a color remover with an ash blonde dye, trying to just make it be a color close to my natural color so I could stop messing with it. (each of these color changes was every 2-3 weeks or so.) Well, that didn't work all that well either, so now I've dyed it back to dark brown and figured I'll just deal with blonde roots until all the dyed part has grown out and I've cut it off. SO, the name ROOTS. But I guess if that's all they've got on me, I'm not doing too bad...

LOL, thses are things we never had to deal with in the infantry.

Of course, rest assured if one of my boys had died his hair auburn the nickname would've been a whole lot worse, lol.

Congratulations Lt Barnes.

When I was in the active fleet many moons ago, we had an ensign fresh out of flight school who hadn't been gieven a callsign. He decided to take apon himself to be called "Iceman"...........The dude pleaded with us to call him "Iceman", I guess he liked the chic flick "TopGun" or something................anyways, we did him one better and started calling him "Slushman"...........name took and he is still being called that today.

If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right!

Sweet! Also a bit of irony that a Fly-girl has the call sign Roots.
