DID ANY OF YOU WATCH 60MINS REPORT ON THE"NBC" PROGRAM IN THE MILITARY?

I STARTED THINKING BACK TO ALL THE CHEM GEAR EXCERISE'S WE DID AND THE BULKY SUITS AND THOSE DAMN MASK
WE TRAINED ALL THE TIME IT SEEMS.

BUT WHEN DEPLOYING WE WERE ISSUED,SUITS WITH THE PACKAGING TORE,CANTEENS WITH NO DRINKING STRAWS,MASK THAT THE STRAWS DIDNT WORK,OUT OF DATE,INJECTORS,FILTERS,SUITS ETC.....

THE ANSWER WAS ALWAYS"HERE'S SOME DUCT TAPE",DONT WORRY THEY SHOULD BE ALRIGHT", YOU'LL GET NEW ONES OVER THERE" ETC.....

THEY EVEN STARTED ISSUING THE NEW MASK RIGHT BEFORE THE START/
SURE YOU COULD SEE BETTER AND EASIER TO CHANGE FILTERS BUT,THEY TORE EASY,THE FILTERS SMELLED LIKE BLEACH,THE FACE LENS CRACKED ETC...

I DIDNT TAKE ONE,I KEPT MY GOOD'OLE M-17,WHICH I STILL HAVE.
IT MIGHT OF BEEN A PAIN,SWEETY,HEAVY RUBBER DUCK,BUT I KNEW IT WOULD WORK!
PLUS WE WORE SUITS FOR THE FIRST 10-14 DAYS THEN WE NEVER WORE THEM AGAIN
JUST MASKS AND GLOVES.THEY TOLD US IT WOULDNT HELP THE SUIT.
PLUS THEY HANDED OUT THE "BLUE"INJECTORS
THE GUYS OVER THERE KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

BUT 12 YEARS LATER,THE SAME PROBLEMS-----------------
NOTHING CHANGED FROM WHAT I HEAR,BUT THIS TIME I THINK THEIR IS A MUCH BIGGER CHANCE OF THE USE.

DECONTAMNATION,WHAT A JOKE,SPONGE PADS OR SHOWERS. GREAT I'M IN A DESERT.

WHY DIDNT THE US MILITARY TAKE A LESSON FROM OUR USSR FRIENDS?
THEY MOUNTED JET ENGINES ON FLAT BEDS AND RAN THE STUFF THRU THE EXHAUST. LIKE A BIG HAIR DRYER.

I'M JUST RAMBLING BUT I'M CONCERNED,
I GET SCARED WHEN I SEE PEOPLE DOING A "DOG AND PONY SHOW" AND SAYING I'M "POSITIVE"ITS FIXED

HOW MANY TIMES YOU HEAR THAT?

GOOSE

I hear you Goose,

I remember Walking 3 miles to get chow with all our gear was BS!!! After a month of that. I was able to wheel and deal my team some time in the rear. We stole 4 hummers from the docks in bahrain. Just so that My TACP team could Do its mission. A few spray cans, and stencils later it Became ??? Armored Property. Midnight requisition was the name of the game for survival in the Gulf.

Luckily haveing previously in my enlisted life been the assigned NBC assistant in my reserve Unit taught me a few tricks of the trade. I taught my guys how to custom assemble our M16 Style gas Masks. I remember how vividly my custom gas mask worked. We had a Scud Alert and spent the night in MOPP-4 I woke up with half a lense full of Copenhagen and saliva. It kept a perfic seal the rest of the night. ROFLMAO We used our Charcoal lined Mopp suits for MRE heaters. Lay a couple layers over the Hood. Insert MRE into the leggings. Presto 10 min later nice and warm MRE's.

But i will have to thank the love and blessings of the American citizens for sending care packages. The Best resupply in the world

MOPP4 in a desert is the closest thing on earth to being in hell.

Long distance- The next best thing to being there.

Goose I used a M17 during the storm myself. The MCU-2P is not very rugged in my opinion.

Having recently been through the new NBC training course, I know what you guys are saying. They are trying to work on making practices a little more effective...but it all only works to a certain extent, it all depends on equipment, training and planning...not just two out of the three...

TOO BUSY THINKING FROM THE PENCIL NOT THE HANDS,
I FORGOT ONE MORE THING TOO,WE WERE SENT TO THE GULF WITH TRAINING FILTERS,WE DID GET THE REAL ONES FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS

FENDER,I THINK THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE STAYED WITH THE M-17,IT MIGHT OF BEEN BULKY BUT I TRUSTED IT.BESIDES MY GLASSES WERE ALREADY INSTALLED
LOL

BACK IN THE 80'S RAVEN YOU LIVED IN CHEM GEAR IN USAFE,YOU COULD COUNT ON RAIN AND CHEM GEAR.

Goose: I have seen the remnants of the NBC influence in the European theater...the old F-4 alert HAS's (aka TAB Vees), the "skupps," and literally the writing on the wall from some pissed off troops.

As far as the training filters, what was the main concern in the Gulf at that time? If the main concern was a nuke attack, the training filters and chem gear still provide protection from the alpha and beta particles that come with nuclear fallout, but are completely ineffective against Chem/Bio weapons, which is why real-world are issued with all of your other gear when you leave.

RAVEN,

BACK THEN THERE WASNT THAT MUCH WORRY ABOUT NUCLEAR OR BIO WEAPONS AS CHEMICAL.

OUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVE WAS TO BE A "SPEED BUMP".
THE BEACHES CHECKERED FLAG WAS KUWAITT BUT AFTER THE "RAGS" HAD IT MOVED BACK TO KFIA.
THE THREAT WAS ENOUGH WE WERE ORINGALLY SUPPOSED TO GO TO KKMC AT FIRST BUT TOO CLOSE FOR THE PLANNERS.
THATS WHERE THE FOL ENDED UP BUT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE MAIN A-10 BASE AT THE VERY BEGINING.

BUT CHEMICAL WAS OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM AFTER THE 5000 IRAQI TANKS THAT COULD BE SENT ACROSS THE BORDER

BUT THE "TABVEE'S" AND WEARING THOSE CARBON SUITS ALL THE TIME WAS NOT ALOT OF FUN.
I WASHED THE CARBON OUT OF MINE AND SOAKED IT IN DOWNEY,MADE FOR A NICE SOFT WALKING SLEEPING BAG WHEN THE WINTER TIGER THRUST HAPPENED OR GERMANY.

TO ME THE BEST PROTECTION FROM THE CHEMICALS WAS YOUR MASK AND GLOVES AND A GOOD PUNCHO.
AFTER THE SUITS WERE PUT AWAY THAT WAS THE MOPP4 EQUIPMENT.

Goose: I know a few guys who removed the charcoal liners from their training chem gear, and just claim it was issued that way. I do know how comfortable they can be when it is cold, though. A cold windy day is the only time one can actually enjoy MOPP2.

I do agree, that your mask is the key...I'd much rather risk getting a little agent on my uniform that breathing the crap in, that is for sure!
