Was at Luke the other day and saw some test-wear people with the new blue tiger-stripe BDUs.

What do people think of them? Anyone seen them worn at their base? I personally didn't care for the look too much.

I think it is a bit confusing. But i also see some Value....

My thoughts are since we have always operated as a multinational force shareing airfields with other countries and services. It does help in one way, and that it allows the Security Police to maintain integrity on the flightline to insure that Someone from a distance with the wrong attire is checked out.

Manytimes in the past at Aviano, Hungry and other places ive witnessed some pretty Riskey security issues of Civiilian police poken around jets and other nonsense that was not intercepted and checked out. A few times stepping to or from a jet ive confronted some Smucks poken around where they dont belong.

From a distance they look like one of the team, but after watching a guy pawing all over a AGm-88 looking for a souvenair has recieved a sever Verbal Assualt by yours truly. After speaking with the Lazy Security police and getting the Bullshit "oh we thought they were just crewchiefs..." all becasue they happaned to wear the same nato Woodland BDU's. this stuff ofcourse usually happens on a wing standown or holidays etc when the ops temp is lethargic, and everyone security concerns are elsewhere.

I do see the relevance for a Identifiable from a distance uniform standard.

Asfar as the value of a Blue tiger strip uniform. Well if the shooting starts on an airfield, the last place people will be is taken cover and concealment behind ghost grey jets. If they are not launching it, they will be in reventments and bunkers returning fire. Not exactly a place where the Blue grey cammies will be useful.

Again. whens the last place an airfield been over ran? Vietnam. potential in korea.. But now were operating FOLS in the land of terroists. so brings up anothe valid point. Whats the version for Desert enviroments if this change takes us away from the current sahara style desert BDUS?

Seems to me the Blue tigerstripes are a Permananet operation location BDU set. What value are they going to have in a Combat enviroment?

Post 9/11, after all the upped security measures were in effect, we had SPs posted at the ECPs to the flightline. I had landed and was taxiing into the parking slot that was right in front of the ECP (not more than 50 feet from it. The SSgt sitting in his vehicle watched me taxi in, park, shut down, get out, fill out the 781, gather my gear and walk towards the ECP. Still, as I approached the ECP exiting the flightline, the guy approaches me and asks to see my ID to compare with the line badge around my neck.

Hmmmmm. Zero brains there.

There's supposed to be different colors, in the same tiger-stripe pattern, for different environs from what I understand.

WHEN WE FIRST GOT THE WOODLAND BDU'S,MAN WAS IT 87 OR 88? ANYWAY WE JOKED AROUND SAYING THE USAF'S SHOULD BE "FLT LINE CAMMO" CROSS BETWEEN ASPHALT AND CONCRETE".
THE DESERTS CAMO'S AS YOU STOOD UP AGAINST A REVIETMENT YOU STAND OUT. THE WOODLANDS WERE THE CHOICE AT NIGHT AND IN THE REVIETMENTS,YOU COULD STAND IN A CORNER IN THE SHADE AND BLEND RIGHT IN,AND FACE IT IN A REVIETMENT,HARDSHELTER,BUNKER ETC... YOU CAN FIND A DARK SPOT.

JUST GO WITH A SHADE OF GRAY IN A JUMP SUIT,MOST CREWCHIEFS WORE COVERAL'S WHEN I WAS IN THE DARK GREEN ONES.

I actually suggested a black jump suit with a white stripe down the back so we would blend in with the runway. They didnt like the idea. I also suggested glow in the dark wallpaper to save on electricity. Same response. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

I sent Horrido a nice little PPT presentation a while back describing how I felt about the new uniforms, as well as some ideas for specialty uniforms. If someone can host it on the net, I'll send it to you.

Anyone know the reason the US went from the 6-color desert BDUs to the current 3-color deserts in the early '90s?

I kinda liked the look of the old Chocolate Chips.

I believe it was becasuethey did not match into the open arid terrain of the desert and actually stood out quite well under optics.

Most desert colors are actually pastel (pink Tones) have been proven the best by the concealment experts.

Wash and wear. That's enough for me. Though I could do without that big thick belt.
