I read (online) that the US military is issuing new AK-47s to the Iraqi military. Is this true? If so, why would we issue AK-47s rather than M-16s? Cost? Familiarity? Tooling?

ak-47 are free they have captured them and the ammo to go with them by the ton, why by new m-16

Yeah I figured they were just re-issuing them, but what I read said that they were purchasing new weapons so as to have legit serial numbers, etc. However, the vaildity of my source is questionable.
