Liberal MP Parrish calls Bush 'war-like'
Says U.S. voters 'out of step' with world

American voters showed that they are "completely out of step with most of the free world," Carolyn Parrish said. (CP archive)

OTTAWA -- The re-election of a war-mongering president shows Americans are "out of step" with the rest of the world, says a Liberal MP infamous for her blistering attacks on George W. Bush.

Carolyn Parrish said Wednesday that she's "dumbfounded" by Bush's victory. "He has been reconfirmed as their commander-in-chief, and he is a war-like man." American voters showed that they are "completely out of step with most of the free world," Parrish said. "I guess it's a reflection of the profound psychological damage of 9-11."

The comments came just hours after Prime Minister Paul Martin warned his MPs in a private caucus meeting not to make incendiary comments in the wake of the U.S. election.

Parrish wasn't at the meeting and apparently didn't get the message.

Earlier this fall, Parrish publicly expressed her disdain for what she called the "coalition of the idiots" who back the U.S. missile defence plan.

Last year, she referred to the Bush administration as American "bastards."

Now, Parrish is urging Bush to dump his ballistic missile program, suggesting his immediate concern should be getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I would hope that he'd concentrate on getting the U.S. out of those two problems they've got," she said.

"I think his immediate concern should be where he has soldiers dying."

New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton said with Bush remaining in power, Canada now has a tough choice to make.

Layton calls missile defence one of the most important issues affecting Canada-U.S. relations.

"Now the Canadian government has to sit down and say, all right, how are we going to move forward on the issues important to Canadians," he said.

"This means that Canadians have to speak up against the missile defence system and say 'No' to participation."

Can anyone explain why the left is so rigidly against a ballistic missile defense system? I have listened to many arguments but the one I hear the most is that it would be destabilizing for one side to have an effective defensive system, so the ill equippped side would therefore launch a pre-emptive strike before it was operational. A related one is that an effective ABM system would give the well equipped side the air of invulnerability, possibly encouraging aggression against others. Here's another take. National resources spent on ABM's are an indication of benign intent, because it can not be spent on offensive equipment that can be used to invade or threaten other nations. Whether it works well or not, it is a purely defensive system. If North Korea were spending all their resources on ABM's instead of IRBM's and nukes, I would feel more secure. Is it just me? The left will not admit it but the real reason they hate ABM's (and all defense related spending) is that they covet the budget to use on their favorite pet project. They can not get enough votes for their pet project, so they malign the value of things that do have the support. What possible bad thing can happen to Canada if the US fields an ABM system? What business is it of theirs if we want to build one just because we can? How do they propose to stop us if we proceed anyway? These are serious impediments to friendly Canada-US relations? I'm stumped.

What Parish<spit> is arguing against is Canadian participation and Canadian territory in the NMD program.

Let me state that Canada will allow NMD and is deciding how to join, not if to join. The PM, the Minsiter of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of National Defence have given their thumbs up. The two top parties (Liberals and the New Conservatives) are going to be pro-NMD (Parish is going to vote against party lines ... and is going to be punish for it - forget any federal projects in her riding).

About the only serious arguement against NMD is that it ain't going to work. However, the supporting infrastructures is so overwhelming that we be stupid not to get it. We may not be able to intercept rockets over the Pacific (or would take 20 interceptors to take down 1 rocket) but the real time info capability of knowing exactly where a rocket is in mid flight can be translated into managing a battle from home shores (imaging CENTCOM doing their jobs without moving to the Middle East). That is a force multiplier of unbelievable proportions.

Outspoken Liberal MP booted from caucus

Carolyn Parrish has been thrown out of the Liberal caucus by Prime Minister Paul Martin, who said Thursday that her behaviour had become "unacceptable."

Ms. Parrish had capped a series of controversial statements with a denunciation Wednesday of Mr. Martin, an attack that shattered the rules of party etiquette.

After meeting with cabinet in Ottawa, Mr. Martin spoke briefly to reporters.

"After speaking with the caucus executive earlier this afternoon, I am announcing my decision, effective immediately, to dismiss Carolyn Parrish from the government caucus," he said.

Mr. Martin, who did not take any questions, said that he had phoned Ms. Parrish to tell her personally.

"I told her that, while I have defended her right to express her views frankly, I cannot, as leader of our party and the government caucus, tolerate behaviour that demeans and disrespects others," he said. "It is unacceptable. There are better, more civil and more effective ways to make your case than those she has chosen."

The move by Mr. Martin removes an embarrassing figure from his party, reducing the chance that George W. Bush will be heckled from the government benches if the U.S. President addresses Parliament when he comes to Ottawa at the end of the month.

It also reduces the already-tenuous position of the minority Liberals. The governing party now has 134 of the 308 seats in the House of Commons. The various opposition parties hold 172 seats and there are now two independents.

Ms. Parrish has refused to tone down her criticisms of Mr. Bush, who she has denounced as a "war-like" leader. But her most serious crime seems to have been rejecting the authority of her party's leader, saying Wednesday that Mr. Martin could "go to hell" if he didn't like her behaviour.

Her attitude received international attention when a photo of her stomping on a Bush doll, filmed as part of a This Hour has 22 Minutes episode, ran on the hugely popular Drudge Report.

Mr. Parrish has long been a thorn in the side of Liberals who want to rebuild ties with the United States. She called the countries contributing to U.S. efforts in Iraq a "coalition of the idiots" and was dismayed at the re-election of Mr. Bush.

She responded to Mr. Bush's election victory by saying that Americans had "reconfirmed [him] as their Commander-in-Chief, and he is a warlike man."

She was scolded then by Mr. Martin but she retorted that she would continue to speak her mind. But on Wednesday she went too far by shifting her criticism to the party's leadership.

"I have absolutely no loyalty to this team. None," she told Canadian Press.

"After what they've put me through and lots of my colleagues, they can all go to hell. But [Mr. Martin's] not going to control me, so all he's going to do is end up looking weak."

Mr. Martin could not, apparently, control her. But he could fire her.

From personal experience, I've got the following view of Canadians...

They spend so long explaining to everybody that they are NOT American that they have no time left to develop any personality of their own...
