Hey guys as you know I was at the Super Dome during this katrina nightmare. Today I was talking to a national guard soldier who saw nothing wrong with pointing a weapon at child to get parents to do what he wanted during the storm. I had to leave the room pissed off.

I can not see how this behavior can be defensible.

Uhmm, did this guy compete in the Special Olympics or something? How can he seriously condone pointing a LOADED WEAPON at a child, so the parents would do something?!

<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> As I have carried a weapon in line of duty the last 17 years or so, I find this much the same as you do, inexcuseable!

Only one reason to point a loaded weapon at anyone!

I had to leave in disgust but people down here seem to give this behavior a pass. If it were not for General Honore I dont know what would have happened. There is video of him putting an end to this crap during Katrina. I can not sleep alot now, and I am getting more and more pissed with the behavior and response surrounding Katrina.

video of General Honore stopping this behavior at foot of canal street http://www.cnn.com/video/partners/clickability/index.html?url=/video/us/2005/09/03/starr.gen.honore.no.guns.cnn

Not much you can do right now about it. Sleep and family should be the only things on your mind with the holidays so close. The outlandishness of a few people , even though it was overly extreme, is in the past now. I tell my wife to just roll with the punches when she dwells on the actions of others in the past. Personally I would have asked the incivdual if they would enjoy someone pointing an assault rifle at their child, and when they made the remark we know they would make, (I would have listened first. [You probably would have done the EXACT SAME THING THOSE PEOPLE DID MORON!!]) call them out on it. But the pat is the past.

In the words of the surrender monkey's: C'est la vie.

Weasel the problem especially in Louisiana if it the behavior is not challenged and put an end to it--these morons will do it again and the issue will escalate at some point.

I dont think this guy understands what would have happened if his weapon accidently discharged. NO COURT IN THE LAND WOULD HAVE ESCUSED HIM.

Weasel I am doing my best to put it in the past but remember I am re entering EMS, I wan to be part of the solution to see this never happen again. Part of this is attending meetings, which brings back vivid memories.

Accidently discharged= NEGLIGENTLY discharged. 99% of all "accidental" disharges were really avoidable, therefore negligent. Accidental means there was nothing that could have been done to avoid it, like an actual mechanical failure of the gun.

Back to the topic though, this is outrageous, ridiculous, and unfortunately, not surprising. <i>"...if the behavior is not challenged and put an end to it--these morons will do it again and the issue will escalate at some point."</i> Exactly. Scariest words in the world: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

They say that the only two things certain in life are death and taxes. I prefer them in that order.

If I caught/found out one of my troops had done something like that the "smoking session" would STILL be going on....

Whilst we all accept pointing a loaded weapon at an innocent kid is not the thing to do, I’d like to throw the following on the table (obviously I wasn’t there so all this is just theoretical).

If you are trying to maintain control in a real tinder box situation and you have a couple (the parents) who are not complying with requests which if ignored could lead to injury or death to them, you or others you have to do what ever in needed to regain control.

If the local pressure / strain has pushed these normal folk into panic or irrational rage, no amount of reasoning will get through to them. Especially if they are feeding off each other’s irrational behaviour.

This irrational behaviour can lead people to the point at which nothing; even threats against their own well-being will get their attention.

Sometimes the ONLY thing that will ‘snap them out of it’ is a threat to something they value more than their own lives – namely the safety of their children.

I’m not suggesting the grunt in question had the sort of psychological training to make these sorts of judgements, all I’m doing is offering a possible justification.

But like I said I wasn’t there…

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...

In response to the first post on this thread, Matt, you should've beat his damned ass.

I have to behave lest I not fit in up here and regain employment. Snipe believe me if I could I would.

As for psychology. Guys it was not that bad, point of weapons excaserbated tensions, and that is what General Honore put an end to. You actually had more chance of starting a fire fight pointing the weapons, rather than treating people with dignity and respect.
