Just to show some actual progress, here are some photos...

<b>Vermin guards in place in the air gaps at the eaves</b>

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/guard1.jpg" border=0>
<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/guard2.jpg" border=0>

In the above photo you can see where I coach-bolted the new 8" rafters to the exisiting 3" ones. In the UK building regulations means you need a permit to replace old roof timbers. I didn't bother and just bolted the new ones to the old ones. Why have one bit of wood when you can have two...

<b>New Rafters and sheetrock</b>

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/newrafters1.jpg" border=0>
Note the big wooden perlin running left to right across the top of the picture above. You have NO idea how many times I've cracked my head on that.

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/newrafters2.jpg" border=0>

<b>Start of the rockwool</b>

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/rockwool2.jpg" border=0>

Two layers of 100mm rockwool should keep the place warm.

You didn't crawl naked up there again did you?

Someone once told me a story about when the fiberglass first came out, some contracter had his wife make him a sleeping bag with the stuff. He figured since it's so warm, it'd be perfect. Only used it once.

Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun!

LOL, that must have been horrible.

No this time sanity kicked in and I've followed some of the advice I've gotten, but with my own little spin on it.

Rather than taping the sleeves to a pair of gloves, I went to the hardware store and got a set of rubber gauntlets. These go all the way up to the shoulders - very kinky.

So attired in my trainers, jeans, knee pads, and gauntlets I went to work in the loft.

What I hadn't bargined for was how badly your hands and arms sweat and these things being rubber don't let it out.

So after about 45 minutes of physical effort, the gloves were actually full of sweat, it was like sloshing about.

Not really thinking too much I raised my hands above my head and was treated to the sensation of a litre of sweat running INTO my armpits.

I have to admit, that was a first.

And tonight I've been doing some wiring...

<font size=5>How to remove an 80lbs lintel</font id=size5>

Here's the problem I faced a while back.

When you're on your own, how do you get a concrete lintel down without dropping it through the floor. It's easy enough to press it up when you're standing under it. But how do you get it from above your head to the ground. I ain't strong enough.

So...

You put a pry bar across the rafters,
Tie a rope to the lintel either side of the middle,
Throw the rope over the pry bar...

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/lintel1.jpg" border=0>

And hope you are heavier than the lintel (this is when I really missed Boomer)...

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/lintel2.jpg" border=0>

The sweet taste of success was slightly damped by the fact the supporting wall fell down...

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/lintel3.jpg" border=0>

Note the excellent continuity. The tan towel appears in almost all the balcony shots.

I keep a tan towel about as it doesn't show the blood quite so bad as cream...

LMAO...

Yep, but the objective was to fix the supporting wall and then put the lintel back up.

Which is a bit difficult if its been shot to buggery...

Goose, if it makes you laugh and helps your recovery I'll fall through a different part of the house and I'll make sure you're the first to hear about it.
