I’m doing a lot more “brown bagging” with the new job and want to get your inputs on some of your favorite items for a “bag lunch”. Do you have any items you have come up with to spice-up a bag lunch or, have you put a new spin on an old item like a bologna sandwich? Give me some ideas guys because, the same old stuff is going to get old quick.

Dice,

I'm a bit slow today, do you mean variations on a sandwich or something different to a sandwich.

Any thing you won't eat or allergies or anything?

And will you have access to a High frequency molecular oscillator?

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...

hi dice-man,

as a christmas-gift, I got a book from my brother with sandwich-recipes. For each U.S. state = one recipe.
If you´re interested, I could post some for ya!

44, yes I do have access to a microwave and frig to store my lunch in and, no allergies... I can eat anything (almost). I'm just looking for ideas to spice-up my lunch.

Homer, some sandwitch recipes would be great! All I do is the basics, bologna, ham, turkey yada, yada, yada....

Sorry Dice, when I carried my lunch pail I was just like my Father,I had the "FRENCH SLIDER SPECIAL"(for you Snipe )
Its White Bread with peanut butter and butter.I took those to school when I was young and its been just a "Family tradition".I still eat them today.
You can always Cook a Ham and eat it all week,or corned beef is always a easy sandwhich.
A PO-BOY is easy too, just differant lunchmeats on a long bun,put cheese on it too with some good Brown mustard or Horseradish mustard.

I know I'm a Sick Puppy,but I like all that above too.

Dice, we bought a freezer full of those TV dinner type lunches. Throw one in the micro for 4 min and there ya go. Hard to beat the price, I think they were .89 each.

M&M got a good point there, fast ,cheap and easy or is that Dice's choice of Woman?
They have all those dinners too you dont even have to put in the Frig, they can just sit on your self in the kitchen.

Bob,I'll ask Throny (Thornburg)about Henry but I remember the Sandwhich Jackson and Crane(SwampBird) talked about it all the time.
I like Potted meat except the "Oink" is chewySpam I love! the wife wont allow it in the House.

Man this Topic is getting Highjacked fast

But M&M has a very good idea and nothing to do except put it in the micro wave.

Dice,
Make something is the crock pot, chilli, pot roast, or something like that and live off of it for a couple of days.

I was going to say Wild Turkey, but i guess that wasnt the brown bag you were talking about....

This past week it was Chicken noodle or hot pickets not in any particular order, washed down with Coffee, again not in any particular order.

ok Dice, I´ll start with Utah ;-)

"the Caputo"
(the book says, the Salt Lake City Weekly has voted Tony Caputo´s as the source of the best sandwiches in Utah...)

1 crusty peasant bread roll, 6 to 8 inches in length, sliced through the middle
1 ounce olive oil
1 ounce balsamic vinegar
1 1/2 ounces slices mortadella
1 1/2 ounces thinly sliced salami
1 ounce thin slices prosciutto
1 1/2 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese
4 thick slices fresh tomato
several lettuce leaves
sicilian marinated olives and pepperonicini

Place the bread on a cutting board and drizzle one half with the olive oil and the other half with the balsamic vinegar, covering the entire cut surface of the bread. Fold the mortadella in half and distribute evenly on the bottom half of the roll. Add the salami and the prosciutto, followed by the cheese. Top with the sliced tomato and the lettuce leaves, cover with the top half of the bread, and slice the sandwich in half. Garnish with the marinated olives and pepperoncini.

Dice,

I had PB& Strawberry Jelly with banana slices the other day. Good stuff!!! I also like to take some fruit with me and I drink about 2-3 Nalgene (sp) bottles of water every day. I pee like a 5 year old girl (every 5 minutes. But the crapper is right across the hall from my office.) but it's good for you.

Balogna or Ham on white with ketchup was always a fav growing up. Kraft cheese on white with mustard and fennel seeds is good (if you can have seeds). Just make a bunch of stuff and try it.

Oh if you like cucumbers, cut one up into discs. then put them in a tupperware container. Add vinegar and salt & pepper. Let them sit for until lunch. MMM MMMM Good!!!!!!

You might be a "Bulldog" if: You bend over and grab your ankles when you hear: "EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE!"

Here's some off the wall variations on a sandwich

Cranberry Jelly and Stilton cheese
Black Grapes and Brie cheese
Anchovy fillets, sliced tomatoes and basil
Kipper fillets and lettuce
Butter fried chicken livers in a bun

For a hot option you can try a Scottish 'Stovie'. Boil some potatoes, add fried onions a can of Corn Beef and then mash together.

This re-heats real well and keep the cold out.

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...

Dice, don't know who does the shopping in your house but next time you're at the grocery, check out all the good stuff that's microwavable..chicken breasts, soups, Boston Market has a complete line of dinners reasonably priced. Leftovers are always good, particularly pasta..Lasagna reheats well in the micro. Get creative with whatever's in the fridge before the kids get to it. I used to have to leave a gentle reminder on stuff I'd put aside.."Touch this and I'll rip your arms off"..something soothing like that usually does it. You're right, sandwiches get boring real fast. Make sure you give yourself a treat too..Pepperidge Farms stuff is great.

Damn Homer,

He's "Brown Bagging" not a Vacation that sounds like a
$10.00 sandwhich.

I think he's looking for more in the "AIR sandwhich line"

You take 2 pieces of bread and "SLAM! them together" to catch the air and eat it its cheap and low Cal.. You can always add Lunch meat or cheese to spice it up too.

LOL, I think that was one of the "easier&cheaper" sandwiches in that book...
But I already thought that too whilst writing it down... not the typical "worker´s sandwich"...;-)

If he showed-up for work with that Sandwhich they would say, "I think we're paying him too much"

You guys never Heard the "AIR SANDWHICH" before?, My Grandpa use to always do it to us Grandkids during cook-outs,he had the
"AIR DOG", The "AIR HANDBURGER" etc.....He 'd tell you how great it was and Jerk our chains until we fell for it,and we'd be eatting just the bun with Mustard and ketch-up and when Mom or Grandma found out We'd get in Trouble and he'd just laugh

I miss that Crap .

Sort of like the old "Wish Sandwich" Goose?

...as long as you dont offer "air beer"....

Goose, "IL" is for Illinois?

LOL, I just say "Pat Bruno´s Italian Beef Sandwich"...
That´s one complicated sandwich,
1. you´ll have to mix the "Chicago-Style Giardiniera"
2. mix the spice rub for the roast beef
3. cook/bake the roast beef
4. ...the sandwich!

I think I´ll settle for BK/McD/...

I normally make something in my crock pot once a week (99% of the time its chili or stew) and put it in 5 rubbermaid containers for each day of the week.

Stew:
1 package of beef stew cubes (about 1.5 to 2lbs)
5 carrots
1 onion
1 28 oz can of chopped tomatoes
4 celery stalks
1 potatoe
2 bay leaves
1/4 to 1/3 cup of tapioca (as a thickener)
salt and pepper
You should be able to use flour instead of tapioca as a thickener, but I dont know how much. Chop it all up and throw it in the pot on low for about 8 hours. Of course those are approximate measurements, depending on the size of the ingredients I may use more or less of each. I don't know what the bay leave do, but the original recipe I got had them in it, and I have always used them because I'm afraid it may come out crappy w/o them and then I'll have wasted all the other ingredients and time.

Chili:
1 package of ground meat, about 1lb (the very lean kind)
1 16oz can of red kidney beans
1 14.5oz can of chopped tomatoes
1 onion
almost a whole green pepper
a few things of garlic (the kind you have to chop)
pepper
chili powder
Cook up the meat in a pan and get rid of the fat. This is why I use the lean kind, I don't want the fat, it makes it easier, and I also know better how much meat I will have left after cooking it. Throw it in the pot and cook it on low for about 8 hours. If you do it just like that, it won't be too spicy, but still pretty tasty. I use alot of chili powder, and also add a chili pepper or two and a habanero pepper. Then it's really good. Bring a bag of crackers and it's perfect.

Worlds Greatest Beans:
(This makes alot, so just cut in all in half for just yourself, or keep it like this to feed your family beans for a week)
2 28oz cans of baked beans
1 bottle of chili sauce
1lb of bacon
1 yellow onion
2 cups of brown sugar
1/3 cup of BBQ sauce
2 tbsp of worschester sauce
Cook the bacon, chop the onion and mix it all up into a big baking tray (I use the foil ones that are disposable, but reuse them). 350 degrees for 45 min. Best beans I've ever eaten.

They say that the only two things certain in life are death and taxes. I prefer them in that order.
