NEW YORK -
Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and
John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

AMEN BRUDDA!!
I dont recall EVER seeing such an even handed equal oppertunity offender as South Park. You can call them all sorts of things ( vulgar etc. ) but bigotry towards any particular institution or ideal aint part of what they do. Mr. Hayes just got tired of taking their money or got pressured from within the Scientology cult that he chose to belong to.
Good ridance, I cant wait to see what Matt and Trey do to get rid of Chef lolol.

Typical, everything is funny till someone steps on your toes. Then all of a sudden it isn't funny. I agree South Park is a even handed offender. They go after anyone and everyone. Hayes just didn't like it when they attacked his cult.

My Brother-in-Law who is a "MENSA"(????) got sucked it to it,
It took his wife almost 2 yrs to get him too see the "BS", now he goes looking for them to pick a fight.

I guess its like an EX-smoker ripping smokers on how "BAD Smoking is".
But I love South Park, they make fun of everyone but it always has a reason in the end and a positive message if you think about it.
Ok, its just funny! <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

That's the odd thing, at the base of South Park there is a good moral to the story 99% of the time. But they would never admit it lolol. Who would have thought a rock Icon (Issac Hayes) would have a poorer image than a smelly turd (Mr. Hankey) lolol
I say ( of course ) BLAME CANADA! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Can't wait to see how they get rid of him.

He's honestly going to get himself into more trouble from other groups, as we never heard anytthing from him when Cartman dressed as Hitler, or what about the episode that dealth with the Catholic Church and preist molestation? Nothing out of Hayes.

South Park is about as fair and balanced as you can get. Everyone gets theres equally on that show!

The entire thing is now topsy turvy, a person "close" to Mr. Hayes says he had a stroke in January and is still recovering from it and has never said anything about leaving South Park! So I guess Tom Cruise and John Travolta are even MORE behind this than I thought? Can we get Michael Moore to become a Scientologist just to make our disdain more efficient?
