Looking for a free version of Linux that will run on an older laptop.
I have an old laptop that I just found out has a bogus copy of XP on it which can no longer be updated. In addition XP is so porky the little machine can just barely run it lol. So it seems like a perfect time to try Linux on something.

It's a Toshiba Tecra with a 233hz cpu and 160mbs of RAM and a 4.7gig HD. It has a DVD drive and pretty much everything works on it. One feature the Linux system pretty much needs to have is support for a wireless network card for the PC slot.
Any suggestions?

Note laptops have always been problem matic with linux since they often use hardware requiring windows code ie the modemn.

Look up Puppy Linux. It's 32 bit though, so depending on how old it really is...

I DL'd a eval version of SUSE10.0 last night ( I THINK I did, havent checked the PC yet) just to see what it's like.

I saw PuppyLinux last night while I was Googling, the Toshi ran XP without hiccups for the most part, just slowwwwwww due to XPs porkyness, soI would think a 32bit Linux OS would be ok.

like I said most of the issue are with hardware like software modemn but I think there are some hacks around that now.
