Thursday , June 29, 2006 WASHINGTON — The government has recovered the stolen laptop computer and hard drive with sensitive data on up to 26.5 million veterans and military personnel. The FBI said Thursday there is no evidence that anyone accessed Social Security numbers and other data on the equipment. Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson, in announcing the recovery of the computer, said there have been no reports of identity theft stemming from the May 3 burglary at a VA employee's Maryland home. The FBI, in a statement from its Baltimore field office, said a preliminary review of the equipment by its computer forensic teams "has determined that the data base remains intact and has not been accessed since it was stolen." Nicholson and the FBI offered no immediate details on how the laptop was recovered, but the VA secretary said no suspects were in custody. "This has brought to the light of day some real deficiencies in the manner we handled personal data," Nicholson said. "If there's a redeeming part of this, I think we can turn this around," he said. Newly discovered documents show that the VA analyst blamed for losing the laptop had received permission to work from home with data that included millions of Social Security numbers and other personal information on veterans and military personnel. capche-capche da - we go forward together Faugh ah Ballaugh -Clear The Way- |

Yeah, the "real deficiencies in the manner [they] handled [our] personal data" is that our social security numbers are WAY overused. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Social Security was created, I believe there was a group of people concerned about it becoming your national ID number, but they were assured that the number would only be used for social security purposes. Now look. You need to use it for everything. Woudl it be so hard for the DoD to go back to using serial numbers for each peson? That would be the number you use for everything at work, that would be the number on your ID card, and if someone stole it, it wouldn't be the huge hassles that SSN's have become. I just find it "Strange" that its going to take at least 2 monyjs for them to "Really tell" if the info wasnt accessed. No one is in Jail, Now they say the Guy had permission. It wouldnt be because of the Class action suits that have been filled? I even read a report plus saw it on MSNBC that alot of these so called "VA analyst" dont go thru a "Real Background check" . I'm glad its back but still "WHY ISNT IT ENCRIPTED?" plus "WHY DO THEY NEED ACCESS TO ALL 26 MILLION VETERANS AT ONCE?" I'm going to keep my TinFoil Hat on still on this one, I got a Ruffle feather feeling. Goose I called the VA to see why I was sent a Death Notification letter To tell them "I'M ALIVE! ,but the VA told ME "No your Mistaken We show you as being DEAD. THE GOVERMENT DOESNT MAKE MISTAKES so its a problem on your end that you need to CORRECT. |

Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun! |

Actually people thought it was the "End of Times" and it was the work of the Anti-Christ (Mark of the Beast 666)and religious groups Refused to get involved in the program and tell you "Your Going to Hell". But I agree its over used. Illinois even took it off their Drivers Lic. and the VA took it off your Health care cards.
