This house renovation is a potentially unlimited source of amusement for you guys, so I'll run a mini blog. Today I go back to doing battle with the loft. But this time I'll have a 1200w 7.5" circular saw with me. I'll be cutting up the chipboard I was carrying up when I fell through the ceiling. Right, sorry to dissapoint you all, but playing with the ripsaw has been delayed. I had to install the vermin barrier and something to keep the rockwool from blocking the air gap at the eaves. I needed something with a smaller mesh than chicken wire and the local hardware shop gave me this stuff that plasterers use to get plaster to stay up under curves. It's a mesh made from what I can only assume is recycled razor blades. It's sharp, damn sharp. The last time my hands looked like this I had just given the old cat some meds. Also because of the construction of the roof, everywhere you want to put your head, there's a rafter in the way. And there's only so many blows to the head that a man can take before the co-ordination starts to go. Tomorrow the new rockwool will start go go down. I might wear some clothes this time. Horrido, This is the mesh I'm talking about <img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/44hollowpoint/mesh.jpg" border=0> It's galvenised steel sheet stamped out to make the mesh. I'm hoping it'll be good enough. I can't really fit the solid rodent grills you're talking about because it's impossible to get them into the air gaps from the inside and I don't want them visible from the outside. With the mesh I can push it into the gap and cable staple it into position. Bearing in mind the only vermin I need to worry about is a squirrel (it's really to stop birds nesting there) and I can shoot the squirrels <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> You're born, you keep your head down and you die. This happened about a month ago, but it's worthy of inclusion. BTW - I'm not making this up. <font size=5>Home wiring projects and Electrical Storms...</font id=size5> Looking back, this wasn't the brightest idea. <b>Don't re-wire the house during an electrical storm.</b> A month ago the UK's heat wave finally broke in big style with a monsterous electrical storm over the Cotswolds. It was a fair way off, but as we are on overhead supply lines, I pulled the breakers and whipped the ariels out the TV etc because I've seen what a strike can do to domestic gadgets. Seeing how the juice was off, I thought I'd update the electrics upstairs. I had a light fitting down and was taking the wires out the back of it when a huge lightning bolt struck real close by. I can only assume the charge came back up the earth circuit (remember the earth circuit is still in place even with the breaker pulled) and straight into my thumb with a big blue flash, a loud bang and the smell of cooking bacon. Which was my thumb. All I can say was "mhhhh, tingly". I did however throw the screwdrive across the room with an awful lot of force LOL... The feeling of pins and needles lasted about 24 hours. Hogsnort, LOL - I'm actually quite good at all the required skill sets, electrics, plumbing, building etc. It's just I don't see why personal well being and safety should get in the way of getting the job done. Thinking about it, I would have probably had a glittering career in the military <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> BTW, your interpretation of the language in the loft was 100% bang on. HP, you really need to post this on my other favorite site, WWA (WoodWorker Association). They'd really get a kick out of this. IP, I've had a mooch abut on that site and I'm not sure they'd think what I was doing was funny. They all strike me as rather professional LOL. Glad you mentioned powertools. The new Makita Rip Saw got it's maiden flight today. I was a bit concerned as I'm a Bosch power tools guy and this was my first stray away from the camp. Happy to say it worked swell. But yet again more southpaw predjudice. Not only do I spend my whole life either dodging (or swallowing hot brass) but it seems every powertool exhausts to the right. I was cutting the T&G off all the chipboard sheets and I feel like I've been sandblasted. I'm not sure what they add to chipboard, but it certainly feels more abrasive that bog standard wood. If you hold the saw properly, all the fragments hit your forearm. If you move that out the way, it hits your right nipple, so then you twist out the way and it hits your right armpit - and I'm ticklish. I ended up trying to use this thing with my head under the sheet I was cutting... I finaly found a use for all those rafters and cross braces in the loft. You can lay the sheet across them and work on it. But, there's always a but... The sheets are 2.4 mtrs long. The loft at waist height if 2.6 mtrs wide. This means there isn't enough width to start and stop the rip saw on a single run. I have to rotate the sodding sheet in 45 degree increments and hack away at any bit I can see. Anyhow the first 6 are all cut now - hopefully rockwool laying tomorrow and then the chipboard on top... You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |
