...and I know all the friendly folks here at WT are always more than happy to give it. Heres the situation:
I moved into a rental house last December. Huge problems with the landlady, I moved out at the end of November. Living there was by far the worst mistake I ever made in my entire life.

Long story short, I'm waiting to get my security deposit back. I got a letter in the mail today from the bitch saying I owe here $1,774.29 for damages (all of them inflated and most of them entirely made up) and the deposit ($1,600) is forfeited b/c of a violation of the lease (another arguable point).

So it looks liek I'm goign to have to go to court. I am goign to go to the legal office tomorrow to find out more, but will I need/should I have a lawyer in small claims court? How much should one cost? What do I ask before getting one?

I can't even describe the amount of anger boiling my blood right now. Any advice from anyone ever in a similar situation is appreciated.

In my estimation you would be better off with a lawyer. Much, much better off.

Sorry to hear of your woes bro, and if you need any help with the bills or whatever, you let us know and we'll all see what we can do to help you out in these tough times. :)

In your lease there should of been a "Military Clause" in there that you Break your lease do to things like
A. PCS B. Long Deployments C. Base Housing becomes available etc...
So depending on why you moved out you win that one.

get a shyster err lawyer, you might not even have to go to court after that, your landlady is trying to shake you down for easy money, once she realises she might have to PROVE your wrong it might just go away. Too bad you arnt still there, you could take pics for evidence.

Jack,

You know what I would do, and base legal will most likely give you the same advice. Especially if you have documentation, say you filled out a pre-lease inspection of the home and wrote down everything that was wrong prior to moving in. Then if you have photos showing the condition of the home when you moved out (date and time stamped would help prove your point here). Should be a no brainer...

Then if it's proven that she's trying to sham you, I would also look at getting her blacklisted so other military memembers won't fall into the same trap.

Asspain = zero dollars
Court of law = + Dollars and the satisfaction of knowing she will think twice before trying this again

Just remember to always CYA
