This was news to me! I was due to retire Dec. of 2001, but got stop-lossed for 2 years after 9/11, and as a Traditional Guardsman, got put on Title 10 orders for 18 months of that 2 years. I then retired in Dec of 2003.
I'd already finished an Associates degree under the VN era GI Bill, and had never enrolled in the Montgomery GI Bill so I never thought anything about it until resently. I don't need to tell any of you that there's a serious job shortage these days, the cause of such can be debated on the Political page. All I know is that I work for a Government Contractor, that contract is up for re-bid, and there's only a 3 in 7 chance that I'll still have a job by this time next year. I've been checking the papers and web for work, but there's just not much out there these days. So I've thought about going back to school to finish a BS degree. (I've always been good at BSing ) So I've checked out some schools both local and on-line and after talking with University of Pheonix here in CO, I'm told that there is a Post 9/11 GI Bill and I'm probably elegible for it. I check out the web site, submit my application along with my most recent 214, and yep, I'm elegible for 70% and for up to 36 months. Whats more, since Uof P has 5 week long classes that run pretty much back to back, I'll be picking up enough credits in a year to be classified as a full time student, wich entitles me to a housing stipen that will be enough to cover my mortgage while I'm in school.
I'd always thought that my brother had it good when his full time job in the AF for a year was to go back to school and get his Master's degree. I'd thought you had to be an Officer to get that kind of deal. Never thought I could get this as an ORF though.
If you've thought about going back to school and have active duty time post 9/11, you owe it to yourself to check into this!
