LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Medal of Honor recipient and former Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs Director Nick Bacon has died.

The department announced in a news release that the 64-year-old Bacon died Saturday morning after suffering from cancer.

Bacon served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1984 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during a 1968 battle in Vietnam. He served as director of the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs from 1993 through 2005.

Bacon was born in Caraway in northeast Arkansas and most recently lived in Rose Bud.

Funeral services are planed for 11 a.m. on July 24 at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock.
