What did our 25 yr old daughter give us for Christmas? \"Mom, Dad........I joined the Army\"

Dead silence.

She got her M.A. last Dec and has been job/career hunting since. I was afraid this decision was a frustration based one. Her next statement:

\"I want to serve.\"

So, she starts Basic at Ft. Jackson on D-Day and finishes her OCS on Veterans Day.

She tried the Air Force, but even if they'd taken her, it'd beenas enlisted. She does her basic as an E-4, goes into OCS as an E-5, and comes out with her butter bar and THAT will force 30MM Jr to salute her!

Regardless, it was a tough decision, but she spent the year thinking about it. I'm proud of her.

Wow that is some christmas present, but good for her! If she thought about it and this is the decision that she made, then obviously she knows what she is doing. Smart girl anyway....i'm sick of working now, she might as well do something that she is happy with instead of being forced right in to a job the rest of her life.

We are all proud of her too.

Good on her. The Army wouldn't be my first choice, but OCS vs Enlisted, certainly the way to go. Does she have a specialty field yet?

She started on D-Day? 6 june? That is a good start in historian eyes.
And now also a personal history day for the family of 30mike-mike.
Be proud on her. Tell her that the A-10forumwarriors

It gets mighty hot at Jackson during the summer months, I know because I live about 20 miles away. Good luck to her and thank God there are still young people willing to serve their country.

What MOS is she going for?

Early MOS thoughts are Quartermaster so she can possibly come back to STL and work at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary here, or Intel and come back to STL and work here at my agency. (See a pattern? ) She hopes to do well enough at OCS to have her pick and will make a final decision based on what she learns there.

Jackson sucks during the summer.... you can watch the rain clouds part as the approach the post, curve around each side, and meld back together on the far side of the post.... when you dig a fighting position there the first 8 to 12 inches is sand and then you hit the hardest clay I've ever contended with.

Relaxin' Jackson my ass.....
