Programs designed to benefit Veterans are rarely widely known. Many Vets and their families miss opportunities they earned to receive the compensation in return for their sacrifices to their country. It is important for those in the know to spread the word about these programs. On that note, Ohio has recently unveiled a Veterans compensation program called the Ohio’s Veteran Bonus Program. This program pays recent Veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq wars a one time, lump sum, payment. Also, family members of deceased Veterans can qualify for the bonus as well.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the program include 1) Service during qualifying periods (See chart below) 2) Resident of Ohio at time Vet entered active duty 3) Current resident of Ohio.

Compensation

Maximum compensation for a Veteran is one lump sum payment of $1500. Receiving the maximum benefit depends on length of service and whether service was in-theater or non-theater.

Veteran – Maximum Compensation – One lump sum – $1500

•Non-theater service $50 per month for compensable periods, not to exceed $500
•In-theater service $100 per month for compensable periods, not to exceed $1000
Service for a fraction of a month shall be paid at the rate of 1/30 of the appropriate monthly amount for each day of service.

Maximum compensation for family members of deceased veterans is one lump sum payment of $6,500.

Family members of deceased Veterans – Maximum Compensation – One lump sum -$6,500

•A benefit of $5000, if the service member lost his or her life as a result of injuries or illness sustained in Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq service, plus whatever bonus the Veteran had earned per month, up to a maximum total bonus of $6,500, OR
•The same benefit the deceased Veteran would have received if the Veteran’s death was not the result of injuries or illness sustained in Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq service, up to a maximum total bonus of $1,500.
It is uncertain how long this benefit program will last. So now that you are in the know, please spread the word to every deserving Ohio Veteran and their family! Give us a call if you are a veteran or family member of any war, particularly World War II, Korea or Vietnam. There may even more benefits available to you.
