Looks like it's too late to erase this topic after an IDF Armor expert who happens to be a friend of mine said that that definetely is a Merkava Mk II. I believe a couple of these are in order: <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'd like to find out the story behind that accident. Does anybody know how/where I can start?

I found something, translating from Hebrew:

Tank Overturns Near Karni Roadblock. No Injuries Reported.

A Merkava tank overturned last night and it's barrel was stuck in the ground in the vicintiy of the Karni roadblock. In the accident there were no injuries, and the tank is now being recovered by IDF bulldozers. (19 Nov, 2000)

Peter, there are a lot of reasons why the US can't just dispose of a ruler of another country, even one as evil as Saddam. Mostly it boils down to two issues.

First, who are we to decide who gets to rule another country and who doesn't? World superpower aside, it's not our place to determine the ruling bodies of other countries, even if they are as terrible as he is.

Second, disposing of Saddam opens a whole new set of problems. Who is to say another, even more terrible ruler won't take power? Then you have the bloodshed of a change of power and Iraq would be worse off than before. So if you get rid of one ruler, you've got to make sure that there is someone better to take over. And that leads you down the slippery path of nation-building. BAD! It seems so easy to just create a government for a nation like that and solve all the problems, but it really isn't. Look to regions like the former Yugoslavia, India/Pakistan, Isreal/Palestine. Any region where some other governing body decided the region's borders and/or government just ends up with endless conflict until a war is fought and the victor decides what the government is really going to be.

So, why we don't just off Saddam? Because it's just not that simple.

Which is mainly why me didn't kill Arafat last year when we had him under siege. Rumors, which were based on pretty strong facts, said that the next-in-line to be the head of the Palestinian state was about 10 times as bad as Arafat. When you're deciding if you wanna mess with other governments, you gotta wonder if it's gonna come back and bite you in the ass.

I appologise Mr. Peter. In the US, a title is rarely used with a first name, such as "Peter." I certainly meant no offense. Especially in this setting where most of us are using a screen name anyway. Which is also why I don't take offense at being called "Mr." when I am a "Ms."<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Horseshit.

We should've killed him in 1991.

Sorry to disagree Mr. Poke ;)

poke: Didn't we play a HUGE part in the governmental change in Afghanistan? Granted, that didn't make everything all better in one swoop, but it has definitely helped things over there...I think we could manage the same in Iraq.

Before we depose him or dispose of him we need to acknowledge the fact that we help create him, and the mes that comes along with it.

Saddam is well on his way to turning his arab neighbors against him, I say we let him fall in the hole he is digging for himself.

The issue is much deeper than one man or his regime.

If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right!
