Got a good. I'm just so glad to be done, I don't care that it's not excellent! But there was one adventure: We took off this morning for the check, and my departure was REALLY shaddy. And then my first maneuver was equally shaddy, and then my first approach was terrible, and all the while I'm fighting and fighting the jet and telling myself "Fly the jet, don't let the jet fly you!" So after my missed approach, the IP takes it from me and shortly thereafter discovers that the trim wasn't working very well. And as we were testing it to see what was going on, we lost it altogether. SO, long story short nothing I did was graded (whew!) and I did the whole ride over again this afternoon. Although the recovery with the broken trim was kind of dicey, because our ceiling actually was only 400' and the plane ended up full back trim. To elaborate for the non-flyers, the trim button on the control stick actuates a tab on the elevators (up and down control) and a tab on the ailerons (roll left and right control). It takes the pressure off so you aren't pushing or pulling hard on the stick for long periods of time. With trim full back, the nose of the plane wants to shoot up. The tough part is that instrument approaches take a lot of finesse. Lots of 5* bank, 2* heading corrections, and if you are pushing or pulling on the stick while you do that, it's really really tough to get small corrections and you roll all over the place. So that's my exciting story for the week. |

Hopefully you'll do better next flight. And without any technical difficulites to hinder and help you out a bit at the same time. Sounds to me, Roots, that you did very well for a doomed check-ride. You didn't lose it, the IP did! Keeping it together says something for your budding skills! Congrats....only 1 more checkride in tweets right? At Sheppard the students do a low level checkride too. Instruments in the T38 is easier. The plane can actually stay at one heading for more than a split second. The instruments are not designed with student hazing in mind. The hood, however, is. That thing sucks. VVI is an issue as the T38 is quite pitch sensitive but you get used to that quick. The speed thing is usually much easier to get used to than people think it is going to be. The big turn radius sucks sometimes when the controllers on the ground fail to realize your ground speed is much higher than they are used to. But, each instrument approach lasts a very short amount of time at the speeds we fly. Plus by then you have that many more hours of experience/practice..... Again, congrats and good luck.... |

Thanks everyone! Yes, Luke, I have only one more. And from what I hear the form checkride is pretty easy. Form is SOOOO cool! I am way pumped about flying again, after instruments drained the life out of me. And to clarify, it took two separate flights for my checkride. We actually had to declare an emergency and RTB immediately once we discovered the problem, and since it was so early in the ride and everything we had done was pretty suspect, nothing was graded and we started from scratch on another flight in the afternoon. |
