I hope you all enjoy this one....
Mr. Sheen, and all other whom this may concern:
I recently sent a letter to the editor of my hometown newspaper, The News Gazette, in Champign-Urbana, IL. It summed up how I feel about the anti-war sentiment on a local level, and I believe you should take a look at it as well:
“I am Airman 1st Class Bryan Stevens, assigned to the 52nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 81st Aircraft Maintenance Unit, Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. I have both witnessed the N. Prospect demonstrations as well as read the article concerning a potential protest during rush hour. In response, I would first like to say, "You're welcome," to all of the anti-war activists in C-U, despite the fact that I disagree with your positions. I feel that you are, misinformed, and are acting solely on emotion. Yet I choose to uphold your Constitutional rights to publicly demonstrate. As a member of the USAF, I have willingly taken an oath to uphold the rights of American citizens, as well as follow the orders of the President of the United States and the officers appointed above me. If I recieve
orders to participate in any actions against Iraq, I will fulfill my duty to my country, despite the label I may be given.
Without men and women such as myself, and those before us, we could be living in a regime where such pursuits could result in such heinous punishments as the removal of ones tongue, such as the Iraqi government utilizes. Without Constitutional freedoms, one could be viewed as an insurrectionist, yet the actions protested are the very actions that keep us free. In closing, I believe it is appropriate to quote George Orwell: ‘We sleep safely in our beds
because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would harm us.’”
I would like to make it known, though, that I feel the same on a national and international level. I did not choose to enter service to defend just my neighborhood, or my hometown. I joined the Air Force to defend my country, and all of her citizens. This includes everyone from the newborn child in a bad neighborhood, to a well-off celebrity. I am here to protect everyone regardless of race, religion, creed, political bias, education, upbringing, and any other way you choose to subdivide our people. That is what America is all about, correct? The Melting Pot, we are all Americans, and I am here to defend that.
So in closing, Mr. Sheen and friends, I would like to remind you that I am here for you when your dreams, your hopes for a peaceful end to all problems, shatter. I will be here, doing my duty, to ensure that you are free to dream again, and keep you safe while you pick up the pieces of your crumbled delusions. Maybe after you see that, you will be more outspoken for the quiet masses who understand that certain things must be done, no matter how ugly they are.
