EzyJack: When I was in the Army there would have been NO mission I would have been happier to do or quicker to volunteer for then retrieving one of our own. It goes to the military mind set. I’d do it for them because they would do it for me. |

But I recall serious assets diverted for one rescue and many ground forces were in some serious firefights that could had used the airpower. I applaud the rescue. At what cost??? Patton diverted some serious assets to rescue either a kin or son-inlaw in WW2 at a POW camp. Lost damn near 200 vehicles. Jack |

COST? THE PJ'S AND SOP'S GUYS I MET WITH WOULD NEVER ASK"WHAT COST IS IT TO ME"? LOOK AT IT FROM THE "PAYDAY ASPECT" THE US MILITARY GETS INTEL WHERE A PFC WAS BEING HELD,SENDS IN FORCES TO BRING THEM HOME,PROBABLY COSTING $100,000.00'S FOR A SOLIDER WHO MAKES LESS THAN 10,000 A YEAR,THUS NOW ANY OTHER PFC WHO GETS CAPTURED OR MIA KNOWS THAT THEIR COUNTRY WILL IF GIVEN THE CHANCE BRING THEM HOME AND THEIR FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTER'S IN ARMS WILL BE WILLING TO GIVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIRS. 1. As others have said, I would do anything possible to help get those POWs back, because I know they'd do the same for me. US Soldiers (marines, sailors ect..) have faith in each other, that any of us would do whatever we can to help. Without it our people who become prisoners of war would have no hope, and that would be a very bad thing. 1. Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire. 2. Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you. |

After this war is over, and the documentary about this rescue operation is playing on The History Channel, go back and read Bat-21. Also reference the history books on Patton's little excursion. The rescue operation that unfolded yesterday will in no way resemble either the Bat-21 or Patton incident. Our fighting forces have learned from those previous incidents, and do not want to repeat them. As an American fighting man, all human life is priceless. I am looking forward to the time when I have enough experience to be checked out as a Sandy flight member. Sandy is the callsign used to denote A-10 Combat Search And Rescue flights (the callsign is a holdover from the A-1 Skyraiders used for the same purpose during Vietnam). Historically, actual CSAR missions are some of the most dangerous and demanding we will ever fly. That thought is in the back of my mind, but for me, there can be no greater reward than assisting in the pickup of a friendly from the clutches of our enemy. If that means that I have to forfeit my life in the process, so be it. I know that the man (or woman) on the ground would do the same for me, and you simply can't put a cost on that. Maybe you should put yourself in the POW's position, Ezyjack: what if you <i>knew</i> that noone was even going to <i>try</i> to find and rescue you? Seems to me that your physical and emotional survivability increases tremendously if you have the hope that your comrades in arms are going to come get you. And that hope exists for any potential future POW's when our troops and pilots see/hear of rescues like Lynch's. They're welcome to all my tax dollars for such missions. Now i am hearing it was Rangers and SEALS. Damned fog of war! Interestingly, this is i believe only the second time that US POWs have been rescued in US history, with the first being Rogers Rangers in WWII. Again, good job fellas, whoever you are... Nam comes as the latest one. Or Speicher in the Gulf War. Just read in the Washington Post we have a dedicated asset for these types of rescues. Which is what we had in Nam. Yeah, I read we had Rangers, SEALs for door kickers and the Force had their combat control team and pilots. Marines were nearby and set up some diversion. We had a helluva of a raid at Son Tay one time in Nam. Well executed and no POWs were there. Jack |

In Vietnam US Special Forces raided Son Tay Prison in the most well planned and well executed rescue attempt i am aware of. There just weren't any POWs there when they arrived. It is not true to say the US Military doesn't try to rescue our guys. "US Army Snipers- One shot, one kill" |
