Slogans reading "Death to Yankees" and "Rosbeefs (Brits) go home" were painted on the central memorial in Etaples, near the Channel port of Boulogne in northern France.

The slogans also called for UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W Bush to be sent to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

"Saddam Hussein will win and spill your blood", one slogan read.

Another claimed the graves were "contaminating" French soil.

"'This violation of a burial place - scandalous in itself - is an attack on the memory of the sacrifice made by the British and American soldiers who contributed to the liberation of our soil,' said the local member of parliament, former Socialist arts minister Jack Lang."

That's right French soil. Not Nazi occupied France. Why. Because of the men buried there and others like them.

That's right French soil. -----------

I read somewhere those military cemetaries are considered to be US soil, similar to an Embassy.

I did some research on the subject when the "earthquake in france" thing was going around.

"granted in perpetuity by the French Government in gratitude of their liberation in WW II."
GRANTED = given     PERPETUITY = for eternity
These cemeteries are sovereign U.S. property and is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
Also, families of American solders killed overseas had from 1945 to 1952 to have the remains reinterred in the U.S. at government expense if they wished. About 2/3 elected to do so.

I assume it's the same for the Brit cemeteries.

All the way...
