LOL, Horrido is a huge Montana class fan.
For those who aren't familiar, the Montana was the last US BB design, and had QUAD triple 16"/50 turrets.

Well.....I hate to concede I am wrong to a ground pounder....But Dennis Leary (er) Snipe is correct about the speed of the Iowas....Those ships can haul ass, like 35 knots and able to sustain it when the boilers are tuned in......And they also have kick ass endurance. Turns out the main issue with the BB's are the man-power, and the fact that those powerplants require a completley different training syllabus....Where as Nuke school, and gas turbine school takes care of the rest of the fleet, in terms of rate training....The Iowas require a completley different cadre of engineering personal. I was in Norfolk last 5 days and got to nose around the USS Wisconsin, as well as talk to some engineering officers in the know, while I can't quote specs, I was very impressed and suprised at what those old battle wagons can do. Also got to hang out at Oceana for a day....Saw me some 14 Deltas (VF-31) up close....Very cool. If your not having fun, your not doing it right! |

I really miss the firepower.... think we could mount a 16" on a Warthog???? I got to go on Missouri when she was laid up in Bremmerton in 1979. She was still in Korean War configuration at teh time. The removal of the aft turret is a no-go. It would waste the trim characteristics of the Iowa. A 96 cell VLS nest WILL fit in between the funnels though, it was studied and prototypes designed in the 80's, as was Aegis. LOL, Takes moral character to concede a point Chad, kudos! We had an Iowa class underway with us for a brief period back in '85 or '86. Wish I would have gotten a pic because I dont now which one it was. Also we were anchored right next to one in NY Harbor in '86 for the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. What a great sight...a BB with the rails manned. Needless to say I am still impressed almost 17 years later. The last time I saw one was about a year and a half ago. My wife and I took a weekend to Newport Rhode Island and stayed at the Navy Lodge. There is a BB I believe it is the New Jersey, not sure though, moored next to the Forestal in the yards there. All the males on my moms side are ex-Navy. I was the only brown shoe. Life was tough for a while. But I still love BB's. I try to take my kids to the Massachusetts BB-59 every year or so. Its a South Dakota and I think they were the most modern next to the Iowas, or maybe the North Carolinas came in between. |

ya i agree the BB were a site see when all guns i believe let loose if that was possible. i have seen several pictures of them in action.when the guns were in action the looked like the ship went sideways if some of the big barrels were turned sideways. |
