Since I've been directed to take leave due to the Wing wanting to minimize use/lose, I've had time to devote to my mil vehicle restoration projects; a longtime side hobby of mine. My current fleet of vehicles I own are:

M-813 5 Ton Cargo truck

M561 Gamma Goat

M1009 CUCV

M151A1 Jeep

Currently, the M-813 is the best runner of them all, neat vehicle to take out in the desert since it'll go anywhere. A guy in PHX wanted to know if I wanted to trade it for an M-123 10-ton tractor truck, but I don't know what the heck I'd do with it, besides it needs a special permit to drive on the road since it exceeds 102" width with it's rear duals left on (it's 112").

The M561 is about 90% complete. Mine is actually the M792 ambulance version of the 561, but many people don't know what a 792 is. It needs a top and bows for the cargo box, and a top for the cab. Neat vehicle that is basically a cab/tractor portion connected by a tranmission to a permanent trailer, and is 6X6. The trailer can roll +/- 30 degrees relative to the front section, and pitch +/- 40 degrees to the front section. Goats can supposedly swim using the wheels to propel it at about 5 knots, but I'm missing the watertight plugs on mine as well as the bilge pump. Damn thing is loud as hell with it's inline 3-cylinder 353cu diesel, and the ride isn't very comfortable. But it goes anywhere.

The 1009 CUCV is basically a military Chevy Blazer uprated to 3/4 ton and with a 6.2L GM Diesel. Normally my most reliable vehicle at 100% complete, this one is now having electrical gremlins that I can't track down. My particular one I got out of Fort Lewis, WA where it served with the 3rd BDE of 2ID.

The 151A1 jeep is the one I haven't yet gotten around to. It's about 40% complete. Is a former Nevada NG jeep and the body is uncut unlike most 151s. Needs many parts for both the body and the engine, but will sure be a fun runner when I get it going. Luckily, parts are fairly plentiful for it.

Geeze, this will keep you very busy in the very HOT AZ sun.

Electrical problems can be a real bitch. If nothing obivious, might add some extra grounding wires. I got one older car that this helped. I actually fried my throttle cable and just added grounds to prevent losing another one.

If the EZ flies well on the new electronic mag, just might fly out and take a gander in the Fall. Lil too warm this summer.

Gamma Go?

OMG, say it aint so!

LOL, my Bn had four of em, and to be honest i don't think i ever saw one of them move in the 2 plus years i was stationed at Sill.

We had a bunch of CUCV's and CUTV's. They were good vehicles. Basicly stripped down Chevy trucks/SUV's with a camo job.

Sounds like a really nice collection bro.

If i could buy any military vehicle, i'd get a M-113. Those things were just a TOTAL blast to off road in. :)

Anybody have an old M-26 they want to give me?

Overkill??? I'd kill a fly with a howitzer if I had one.

Thanks. But you're right, the 561 is maintenance headache. When it runs, it goes anywhere, albeit not comfortably at all but it goes. Found a guy in AZ selling an M880 Dodge 5/4 ton pickup (precursor to the Chevy CUCV sries). Neat truck, but don't care for the 318ci gas engine. Another guy selling an M274 Mule 4x4 vehicle, but asking $11,000 for it; somewhat steep IMO.

The Gamma Go is a no shit neat looking vehicle, they were just reliability challenged. ;)

I highly reccomend a -113.

Was it the 113A1 that had the two "poles" that would move fore and aft for steering the vehicle? I thought that, yet a 113 I looked at had a steering wheel.

Rode in an M577 as ALO for an Army unit. Talk about cramped quarters. Plus, I figure the 577 with it's raised roof and multitude of antennas screams "target" to the enemy. :)

Every 113 i have ever seen or drove(A1-A3) had the laterals (the two poles).

I have NEVER seen one with a steering wheel, if you see that again, get a pic! That's one seriously rare beast.

We used 577's for everything, the were mobile CP's, FDC centers, relay stations, you name it.
They were based on the M-113A2. Good vehicles.

What's wrong with a 318? They run forever and never give you any problems unless you have the aluminum/plastic timing chain gearset. You could always upgrade it to a 360 for more power. They make stroker kits to kick it up to 391 cubes IIRC...... Or is just that it burns gas instead of diesel that you didn't like?

Oops, sorry for the Hemi meant to put a 318 there....NOT!!!!!

I should've expanded on my point some more. Nothing wrong with the 318ci; I should've said that I'd prefer a 360ci in these trucks over the 318ci.

Seems like alot of vehicles were based on the M-113. Does anyine have an exact list of how many M-113 based vehicles there are out there?

On the ice we had this track nicked the Weasel. It had a 413CID gas motor. Around that size, we added a Hurst gear shifter to the sucker. Kind of a kick to drive but broke often.

We had SnoCats too. I was driving one,one day out on the frozen Pacific and did some 180s and almost 360s for kicks. Hoping the damn ice didn't break and moi would be feeding the fishes.

We also had these ungodly looking monsters with tires for transport.
