There was an article in Popular Science about these guys. The bottom line was that the mortality rate amongst these "Birdmen" (and "Birdwomen" I might add) is 96%. 72 of the first 75 birdmen were eventually morts. It also said that they could get forward speeds of around 80 mph and travel up to 1/5 of their altitude in miles, achieving a 3 mile horizontal distance from a 15K' jump. They were also able to stay airborne for 27 seconds from a 3K' jump with their terminal velocity about 1/3 to 1/4 (35 mph) of normal skydivers (130 mph).
