for about 2 weeks my mouse (standard PS2 type, "Intellimouse" with scroll wheel natch) has been frequently (but not always) double clicking when I click the left button just once, this has caused a number of annoying deletions as I delete one thing but 2 or more get deleted and clicking the "back" button on a browser can take me several pages back (heard the browser give 4 click last night!). My "click speed" is set to a near middle setting. Is this a familier problem? Can the mouse be uninstalled/re-installed? how? Thanks

How long've you had it? Something might be stuck underneath your left mouse button that's causing it to 'stick'. You might try taking it apart and doing a quick cleaning (if you're confident enough in your "take-apart-and-put-back-together" skills).

Also, make sure that you don't mistakenly have your settings so that a single click is recognized as a double-click. To check it, go through here:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse

Once there, the first (and selected) tab should be 'Step Savers'. Check to see if 'Click Saver' is checked. If it is, uncheck it, then click 'Apply' and 'OK'.

If it's neither of those things, you can uninstall the mouse and re-install it. Make sure you have the software for the Install (either on a disk/CD-ROM, or if it's a system mouse (came with the computer, etc.) it should be on your hard drive or on a System Restore disk of some kind.

*** WARNING - Only attempt the following if you know what you're doing. I don't wanna be held responsible for screwing up someone's hardware profile. (No offense, boomer)

Go through this process:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System

Select the 'Device Manager' tab, and look for the 'Mouse' listing with a '+' next to it. Click the '+' and the name of your mouse should appear. On this computer, mine shows up as 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port'. Click that to select it, then click the 'Remove' button at the bottom. A warning will pop up, click 'OK'.

Go ahead and restart your computer, it should pop up with one of those "Windows has detected new hardware on your computer" messages. It will search for the software to load the mouse. If it finds it on your computer, great. If not, use that disk/CD with the drivers and such to install it.

More than likely this sounds like a hardware issue (something wrong/stuck with the mouse) rather than software, so you probably should take a look at the mouse itself before attempting to uninstall/reinstall the drivers for it.

Hope this helps.

when a mouse goes, it's usually the left button...the one that gets the most wear.

Right... which prompted my very first question: "How long've you had it?"

Agree with both the guys above.

If you go through the tests KF has outlined and a h/ware prob seems to be the most likely, you can then try switching your mouse to be a southpaw one. The options to do this are on the first Mouse Properties dialogue screen. Just select a left handed mouse.

Your right button becomes the left etc. If everything then works OK you've definately got a 'ed mouse.

From your comments that you spend most boring evenings on the computer yankin off, it sounds like your mouse has probably seen some serious action.

You know that targeting system for the gun in an Apache (don't know what it's called) that points the gun where the pilot's looking or whatever?

Why hasn't someone come up with something similar for computers? A pair of glasses that puts a targeting reticle where you're looking, then you blink or click a button to "click or double-click".

I dunno... probably a waste of engineering...

Yeah, that thing...

Hell, at least I can vaguely convey the idea well enough that someone else recognizes it...

of course the helmet uses some 6 sensors, and I beleive they cost around 20G (helmet only) apiece. but other than that good idea Froggy :)

Overkill??? I'd kill a fly with a howitzer if I had one.

Well, of course it'd have to be dumbed down a bit... but for quadraplegics and stuff, it'd be pretty cool I think.

LOL, just when you think a thread is going somewhere remotely sensible, somebody has to go and torpedo it.

Snipe, please post a url to those audio files.

BTW our company is start to look at NOMAD, a personal heads up display. It can link to GPS and you can wander around a real oil rig whilst looking at the CAD model it was generated from.

All the techno-dweebs where starting to get real excited until I pointed out it would be a bit of a bummer to walk onto an elevated platform that was only on the model and not there in real life...

a reply at this point is obviously pointless ROFL.

lord froggy I tried all that this afternoon(before your post) except I didnt restart in between, I'll try that again in a bit. I got no probs taking things apart, but this is a snap toghether kind of thing so it'll be a bit tricky.

PS I've had it since I had the puter (almost 3 years I think) and I had is as a "lefty" from day one for targeting in flight sims, but swapping is a good idea for a check, you ARE from checoslovakia right? hee hee Thanks everyone

And, of course, M21 fails to give credit to the one who bestowed that wonderful website upon him roughly one year ago...

No prob, boomer... just hope it stays that way.

The reason you restart it is to have your OS load itself with the new settings. If you just "change" the settings and continue, it hasn't recognized them yet. But as long as it's working now, you should be fine.
