A fake gun proved no match for a sledgehammer in an Ohio attempted robbery, reports WEWS-TV of Cleveland.

Customers were eating in Stoney's Pizza (search) in Columbus Saturday night when a man came in wearing a ski mask and waving a gun around.

The shop's staffers locked themselves in a walk-in refrigerator. Customers lay on the floor while the gunman searched an office for money and tried to open a cash register, both in vain.

Finally the robber gave up and started walking out. He hadn't noticed that a customer had slipped out the back door and was waiting outside for him.

"He already had tape on his license plate," J.R. Croy told the TV station. "The door was open and the van was running. He was on his way out."

Croy bashed the robber in the head with a 2-pound sledgehammer. Four times.

"He wouldn't go down," Croy explained.

Police and paramedics soon arrived to take the gunman to the hospital in handcuffs. His weapon turned out to be a paintball gun.

The pizza shop gave Croy $500 for his trouble, but he says he's no hero.

"I'm sure others in the store," he shrugged, "if they'd had that opportunity, would've done it."

He IS a hero.

If more people gave a shit and lost the Baaaaaaaaaaah i'm a sheep attitude these nitwits wouldn't pull this crap.

Oh, and nice job on the Pizza staff's part protecting their customers.

My favorite pizza place packs a .357 magnum behind the counter for this sort of thing.

I like how the "The shop's staffers locked themselves in a walk-in refrigerator" I'm sure the owner is proud of his employees...atleast someone had the balls to take some action...

I'm tired of idiots continuing to plague paintball with their stupid antics... the sledgehammer part was funny, but the fact that he was using a paintball gun is damn frustrating. Seems like everyday some other asshole's doing something stupid with paintball equipment or while playing paintball, and it ends up putting more emphasis on why paintball is "dangerous."

Yeah, dangerous to people that belong on the Darwin Awards website...

I caught part of some sitcom the other night and the scene was a paintball field. Talk about showing everything wrong. Everyone was just wearing eye goggles and most of the time they were up on their foreheads...until someone shot at them and it would've been too late. Did not show good range safety. Along with having one character give a "coupe de gras" shot from 6' on a downed player. Agree wholeheartedly, kingfrogger.

KF, doesn't it strike you as a bit more than mere coincidence that paintball players do these things on a seemingly regular basis? ;)

My brother is a big paint ball enthusiast like a few of you guys. Keeps trying to get me to go.

I tell him the same thing everytime, "If there are no tanks and no air, where's the fun?"

You paintball guys should try NTC sometime. :)

For what it's worth, Snipe, in paintball there are tanks and air...tanks of compressed air, tanks of co2 or tanks of nitrogen!

It's not coincidence... it's media highlighting the few instances of paintball being exploited or misrepresented. Safety nuts and parents everywhere that aren't made aware of the high safety standards and in-depth procedures that paintball players and field owners, etc., all go through to ensure the safety of their sport are the ones that want to see paintball go down.

Someone "attempts" to rob a pizza place, gets whacked on the head with a friggin' SLEDGEHAMMER. Then out of left field they mention "his weapon turned out to be a paintball gun." Whoop-dee-fuckin'-doo.

30mm covered the air part, but in scenario games there's sometimes another type of tank... the kind Snipe's more interested in. I offer the following:

Talk a look around at this, you'll see why i'm not.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... my/ntc.htm

With a playing field that encompasses 100s of thousands of acres, and engagements of up to brigade size there is no comparison to the US Army NTC anywhere in the world except in real war.

Certainly not on any paintball field.

Playing war against the US 11th ACR(OPFOR)is just slightly differenet than playing with a bunch of guys from the office, eh?

Call me a snob...i can take it. ;)

SNOB!!!

LOL, jk.

Although you should come paintballing with me and my buds. We're insane enough to make you wish you were back in the field. Seeing
three crazed teenagers running at you yelling SHARRON! at the top of their voices and cursing in English and Hebrew has been known to paralyze people in shock and fear for an easy kill. Plus, grenades are fun...

Yeah, but A-10s flying Air Warrior don't support paintabll games, they do however support exercises at NTC. *shrug*

True, but what fun is an A-10 if you're not flying it? I mean, sure it's a warriors best friend, but I'd rather ber shooting a real gun than watching a plain fly. It's the hands-on feeling

They current or future IDF as well? After the Jihad Paintball incident not too far from my doorstep, I'd be picky about paintball allies/enemies.

We're all future IDF. As a matter of fact, one of them is going on the IAF Hell Week (Gibush) tomorrow. If he passes this he has passed all of his tests and he has a spot in the IAF Academy. The IAF Gibush is the hardest of them all, harder even then the Flotilla 13, Sayeret Golani or Sayeret Tzanhanim Gibush.

What good is an A-10 Vs. a real gun? Imagine being a grunt in the field and calling them in. Same thing happens with NTC...they play as close to real as possible without killing each other. Snipe has a point...

A-10s, Apaches, Kiowas, Blackhawks, Abrams, Bradleys, MLRS, M113s, Paladins, Patriots, Heavy Hummers...NTC has all that and more.

MILES gear has got paintballs beat by a wide margin as an engagement system anyway.

You paintball guys don't know what YOU'RE missing...believe me. :)
