Earlier, their bus convoy pulled over at a Wendy's fast food restaurant for a photo opportunity lunch that provided an awkward moment.

Spotting a group of US Marines, Kerry, who has made his Vietnam War service a cornerstone of his campaign, went over to chat. The Marines, who all turned out to be staunch Bush reporters(sic), were not impressed.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one of them told reporters afterwards. "I'm 100 percent against" Kerry, he said. "We support our commander-in-chief 100 percent."

Picture a thought bubble above the Marines head. "If he doesn't remove that finger in about 2 seconds I'm gonna shove it right up his ass. Then I'm gonna poke out his eyeballs, and put them right up there next to his finger so he can see me kick his ass!"

DEM'S MARINE MISFIRE

By STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN

July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.
Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against [him]."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

It wasn't an auspicious start to the senators' "Believe in America" bus tour — a 22-state, 43-city tour that will cover roughly 3,500 miles over 15 days in an effort to carry some of their momentum out of the Democratic convention.

But the rest of Day One went smoothly, as massive crowds — including what Kerry said were up to 20,000 in Harrisburg, Pa., — greeted him, Edwards, their families and Ben Affleck at the tour-kickoff event in Boston and at two stops in the Keystone state.

"Ninety-seven days [left in the campaign]; let's make it happen," Kerry told hundreds of bleary-eyed but upbeat supporters who showed up at a 7:30 a.m. rally on the shores of Boston Harbor — less than nine hours after Kerry finished his acceptance speech.

Kerry also employed Paul Revere's famed midnight run and imagery of Bunker Hill to bash President Bush over U.S. intelligence failures.

"These are the places where people dared to stand up and put their lives on the line — to take a risk — for something they believed in very deeply," Kerry said of the Boston neighborhood where he was speaking.

"One if by land, two if by sea, and the message was right. Come to think of it, they had better intelligence than we do today about what's going on," Kerry continued, drawing the loudest applause of the event.

In Harrisburg, Kerry noted that there was more bad news coming out of the financial markets yesterday, with oil prices reaching new highs and economic growth limping along at three percent.

First of all the article said that the marines were Respectful. They shaked hands, they answered his questions.

The problem I have with the article is the fact that. It never said what the marines did to be labeled as "Disrespect".

I think this Authors account is highly flawed, subjective and biased. Even more so. It sounds like hearsay. Their is absolutely no factual dialogue of the exchange. The only disrespect i find is the fact that the author imposed an opinion and did a diservice to both John Kerry and the Young marines for their Opinions and Views.

These young men are carrying the burden of our Commander in Chief., They have every right to disagree in Mr Kerry's actions and policies.

Mr Kerry clearly took it upon himself to have some Q&A dialogue with these young men. He opened the floor for free and candid discussion.

As an American Citizen and Former Servicemember . I am not required to agree, disagree, any political statement policy or opinion. Those are rights that are given to me under the constitution and UCMJ.

As a Service Memeber One is only required to carry out the Orders of the National Defense policy and Chain of Command. Their minds and soul is purely theirs.

This is Freedom.

Bad thing is. Their command is going to rip them a new ass.. the heat will be flowing im sure.

Better get to loving Carpet boys. Sign your rug burns next to my name. Been There Done That.

The Marines appear to have been in no way disrespectful. The marine pictured is even standing at attention despite Kerry jabbing at him with his finger.

I believe that the quotes attributed to the marines are correct, and i believe that any soldier would not say boo in front of the politician for fear of reprisal back at his unit.

Senators know lots of officers to F your world up if you say something they don't like.

I also think the article is slamming Kerry, and not the Marines.

Oh, he knows where to buy 'em (and in bulk). I think it's more of a 'Note to self - get one of those!'

If Clinton was in this situation, he would just ask the Marines if they were gonna finish the rest of their fries.

Here is yet another example of clever writing by a member of the swine media. If they have a story that does'nt have the impact they want it to have, write it creatively for impact.

What impact do you allege the writer was looking to achieve?

Pro Bush, Pro Kerry, or anti-military?

To me, i just see three Marines that weren't too happy Kerry 'imposed' on them.

Mudd...actually I laughed my ass off at the french fry thing..thus the face above my statement. What I was getting at is how the writer said "as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant." First of all, this fellow could'nt even use proper english; ie "dissed".
Journalists are supposed to uphold a higher standard of the language and the written word. God knows they have enough education in the english language.
The writer creates a mental image of haughty Marines verbally assailling an aging veteran who simply wanted to bond with them, but, instead humiliated him in front of a group of his peers. First of all, getting injured three times does not make you a hero. It is much more than that otherwise almost all of us would have several purple hearts. I was not there to say otherwise obviously, what john kerry did during the Vietnam war, but the important thing is that the journalist created a picture in your mind, of his device.
I am in agreement with Mudd that this sounds more like hearsay than factual reporting. Very few "journalists" give a truly unbiased view of the "news". The concensus among the media empires is that we have to be told how to feel about things, or, someone will be compelled to create an image to sway us to their beleif. I also see four Marines who are not big fans of Mr. heinz, but only because I chose to ignore a good chunk of the article.

Goose I spent some time with marines when I was at sea. I mean dont get me wrong we werent intimate or anything like that. Anyway if I know marines they probably tried to play hide the salami with one of the candidates wives when the guys were at the checkout counter.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson
