With stats like these, I have a hard time phathoming how we're still the most powerful country in the world. Perhaps this is just "lying with statistics"? Edited by - tritonal on Sep 06 2004 12:10 AM |

Well who knows. Big dumb brutes? -The eight hundred pound guerilla. As for the lying part. Someone over on a diffent board did say that "America and Russia both live in a cage by their own chosing. But America has more rocks & a tire swing in it's cage." |

The US does not seem to be behind in the commercial and military use of science and technology. Maybe that means we have the proper number of technical types to get the jobs done efficiently. Here in the US, students are free to pursue any opportunity...or not. If there is a real need for engineers and scientists, students will follow it. Stop whining. Soon they will be complaining that there is a "glut" of mathematicians, so students should switch to becoming lawyers. Keep in mind, the main reason I put this thread up is because I want to show what happens when an institution is strangle-holded by corrupt/liberal union. Here in the US, students are free to pursue any opportunity...or not. If there is a real need for engineers and scientists, students will follow it. Stop whining... Yes, that's all true, but visit an engineering dept in todays colleges: It looks like the UN. It is a very low ratio of American kids to International students. -Indian Students that were rejected from the Bombay campus of IIT were given full scholarships to MIT! Personal evidence: -In my friend's enginnering class, the midterm average was a 34. However, there were two students who got B+'s without the curve... they were from Brazil. -When my other friend moved back to Israel when he was young, he was two grades behind his peers! The reason we are an economic powerhouse and will stay an econmic and military powerhouse is because of our free society, capitalist market, and our emphasis on individualism. There's also much more revenue for industries to develop and research new technologies. And we import alot of this talent. |
