I'm looking for some help in improving this a bit. I figured I could get a good bit of advice from people here. So, give suggestions, and when I've completed the second version, I'll post a link to it in my Livejournal.
Children laughed and ran about, bags of candy in hand. Parents and police watched over them with strained looks. On the particular street Captain Johnson pulled to the curb on, an MTHEL laser battery sat staring at the skies, reminding them of the trouble to the west. The large house on the corner had called in, complaining about shadowy figures moving around in the back of the large yard, out of reach of the lights on the house.
His partner saw a dark shape on the ride around the block, and they watched through the window to try to catch a glimpse. The figure returned, a large form just beyond the reach of the lamppost. "Here's the thing." He told his partner, and they got out of the car. They had just gotten ready to talk when something flew out and hit the light, darkness flooding in with the tinkling of broken glass. Guns were out, and flashlights stabbed at the shadows, always missing the figure, or just giving them the hint of the large being. Two more rocks came out, hitting the flashlights out of thier hands, followed by a hollow chuckle. It carried something large on its shoulder, and the seargent got a feeling this wasn't a prankster out for some fun.
"Trick or Treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat..." The jingle sounded out in a tinny voice, like from a speaker. The shadow danced about, and lept on top of one of the brick pillars that supported the wrought iron fence. "If you don't, I don't care..."
The two officers threw themselve back against the car as it suddenly jumped down to the sidewalk, its armor giving it a large, blocky appearance. The thing threw its head forward, singing out the last line, "I'll pull down your underwear!" Laughter followed, abruptly cut off as it vaulted onto their squad car, and hopped into the street. It pointed the rocket pack on its shoulder towards the hummer, and talk wasn't possible through the roar of the rockets and the subsequent explosion of the MTHEL. The armored figure swung to face them, raised a hand to its head in a rough salute, and bolted off down the road. Johnson swore and scrambled into the car. The radio was playing music. He switched to another channel, and got classical. Another was playing country.
"As if jamming wasn't enough..." his partner muttered. Johnson reached for the keys, only to have his ears assaulted by the thunder of a machine gun. The car shook, and a look out the windscreen showed smoke and steam coming from holes in the hood. glancing towards the yard, he say another armored figure perched on the brick fencepost. It hopped down onto the sidewalk and ran off after its companion. farther down the street, more armored figures could be seen. Johnson thought a moment, thinking of the layout of the city. An oath from the passenger seat showed that his partner had just reached the same conclusion. The armored figures were headed for the White House.
