alternatly loving/hating this new Gateway puter. Never gonna buy another thing from them. Funny, the thing I THOUGHT I would have trouble with, (the 19" LCD monitor) is just great! Shot off my third or forth angry letter to them today to fix it, will start contacting magazine complaint departments shortly. The keyboard doesnt even work right, call me a tinfoil wearin wacko but I think for $2300 it SHOULD!
Next time I'm goin back to Dell or building my own.

Otherwise it's goin ok, just too much work, too little time, too many late hours. If that's the worst of my complaints I guess I aint too bad off :-)

Must've gotten a lemon, Boomer...ours is running well and my daughter's laptop has so far survived college. Due to operator error she messed something up and their phone tech had her up and running in 15 mins. <shrug> Don't blame you for being P.O.'d.

So, you have trouble. We all have trouble. Build a bridge and get over it.

So far I'm replacing (out of my own pocket) the keyboard, the mouse, and the audio card. Will likely replace the video card as well since it's not the one I ordered and paid for. Ordered the ATI X600XT video card, I MIGHT have the X600 Pro in this thing but the Nero info tool says it's an nVidia 400 or something!! Either way it isnt the card I ordered and paid for.

Folks this thing cost beucoup bucks and didnt even come with the normal media software that comes with the sound and video cards! The only software it came with was Nero for burning CDs and the MS Office suite stuff which I dont even use ( and wasnt allowed to opt out of). Didnt even come with an OS disc (XP Pro)! I would expect that from a cheap entry level box, but not THIS rig!
The front headphone and microphone jacks dont work (they told me to "jiggle the wires").
The Autorun for discs dosent work (even hacking the reg per an MS Knowledge Base article didnt fix THAT one).

It DOES actually run rather well, it's just all this little crap that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Kinda like thumps and rattles in a Rolls Royce, they just shouldent happen. I was on the phone with New Dehli or whereever till the batteries went dead, and traded numerouse Emails this week with the "tech staff" which wernt even reading my messages at times and just offerig "stock fixxes" which in several instances didnt even apply to XP!

Gateways fix is for me to send it to them for at leaste a month!!

update: as I finished this post my mighty Gateweak chirped a mighty chirp from the speakers and locked up solid as a rock lol POS!

Boomer,

Sounds like you got a recycled system.

It's not un-common for the box shifters to 'fix' a PC rejected usually by one of their corporate clients (you know the customers they HAVE to look after) and then ship it to an unsuspecting domestic user.

When a box arrives at the returns department that roughly matches the spec you ordered, it's re-imaged with the OS from a central server (cos the IS dept who got the box last time lost the original disk) and then sent out to you.

That would explain the trail of f*** ups you've encountered

Was there anything when you unpacked it to suggested it wasn't a brand spanker?

I'm not sure if Gateway offer the same facility, but Dell let you punch the asset tag from your system into their support website. This gives you a 'birthday' for the box. If it's any YOUNGER than your order date that's what'll have happened.

But either way sorry to hear your getting so much shit from it.

nah I think it's a new system.
Things ARE looking up a bit. I got a new Compaq ( yeah I know lol )keyboard today via wal-mart/UPS and it works and feels great (the spacebar actually WORKS unlike the Gateway branded orig) even all the multi-media keys work lol. Put in a new (but less advanced) Soundblaster audio card to replace the Audigy, so now I have the media stuff I want and I think the software can even be upgraded. Other than a Firewire port ( I have 3 0r 4 others )I have NO idea what the advantage of the Audigy card was supposed to be. So things going forward rather than back :-)

it's the first time I havent bought Dell, and I wont make that mistake again. Although I have a wicked deal on a used corporate Presario laptop heading my way LOL.

I went with the Gateweak because it had some features that the Dell didnt ( a CF card reader right in the front panel, and an all format dual layer DVD burner [ it even reads DVD RAM! ] ) and the price was about $300 less which will be a wash once I get a new video card which are $$$$$ right now for PCI Express slots.
