Well it seems I have some corrupted drivers and I need to do a system restore on my computer. I have an HP I bought at Best Buy with a three year warranty. The geek squad has determined the only way to fix the corruption is the restore. I hate the restore since I have had to do it in the past and lost everything. I asked the geek squad to help back-up all my info so it would not be lost. They said sure for a 79.95 fee. WTF, I paid for a warranty and the computer is not working as advertised so why should I have to pay. Anyway I lost the battle.
So do any of you know how to back up all files so they wont be lost during system restore? I am running XP and MS Office Standard 2003. Is there a simple way to do this or a shareware program that will save my files. I had geek squad send out a tech to replace the floppy A drive and he said do a restore without formatting but would show me how to do it. HELP.

Not a puter expert, but I'll ask the easy questions.
Did you try "System Restore"? Start/All programs/accesories/system tools/system restore. It can roll back your config to an earlier date, might help, never did much for me.
Do you have a CD burner? Or an extra hard drive? You'll need one or the other to back-up/copy all those files you dont want to lose.
If you have a CD burner, check the CD burning program, it might have a "Back up" option that will walk you through it.
There is also Start/All programs/accesories/system tools/Back up. Mine is a Gateway so it doesnt work, yours might.
If you end up having to do a restore from your Windows CD, do yourself a favor and just reformat the hard drive instead. It will be like having a brand new system with no old junk hanging around in the registry and what-not to screw you up later. I personally havent seen a system restore from the CD fix much of anything, but it has helped some folks.

keep in touch cause I know this stuff sucks.

Fender,

All of Boomers advice is solid.

Give me an hour to get my $hit together and I'll post some more tips and stuff up.

For reasons I WON'T go into I need a shower real bad and stopping smelling is taking priority <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>...

LOL, it was nasty <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>…

That’s better, when even you can’t stand the smell of you, it’s bad…

Fender,

First, what makes you think your puter is so badly pooched you need to do a recovery?

I’m guessing you are using it now to get onto WT.

From plenty of experience with XP, it best to either fix the drivers directly, or re-build from scratch. I know Dice fixed his go slow with a system restore, but he was one of the lucky ones.

It’s almost impossible to backup a puter so you can restore your settings exactly as they were after a re-build. IMHO the best you can hope for is to keep all your data and just accept you will need to re-build the rest.

To be honest, you really should re-build a puter from the ground up once a year.

Before we start dicking about with your puter, we really need to do a backup, As Booms says, I really hope you’ve got a CD burner or a decent sized USB memory stick.

Even if you paid the money for HP to do a backup, the contract will come with so many disclaimers it’s not fit for a snot rag. No company will cover consequential loss from missing one of your critical files from a backup.

Our pet geeks swear by something called Secure Copy. Here’s a link to a web page that should allow you to download a trial copy.

http://www.pnltools.com/productinfo.asp?productid=48&refid=132

But you don’t need anything that flash. Drag and drop copies are fine.

Before doing any backups, clear out your Internet temporary files folder, empty the recycle bin etc. The more $hit you can get rid of, the quicker this will be.

To backup most of your stuff like web favorites, you just need to copy your entire profiles home folder.

Look in the c:\Documents and settings folder, you should see a folder with the same name as you use to log on to your PC.

Copy this to a CD or stick.

It’s a good idea to grab a copy of the All users folder as well, this can sometimes have some stuff in it as well.

A good tip to make sure you don’t miss any files from the backup is to use XP’s search function.

Search from the root of your C drive for all files *.* Then once it’s finished (this can take sometime) click twice on the modified date column header. This will reverse sort by date. You can then scroll down the list looking for files you want to keep. The logic being the stuff you work on the most will be closest to the top of the list.

And you know how it goes, the one file the IRS is on you’re a$$ for won’t have gone into My Documents and will be lost.

Take manual copies of you ISP properties setting and the IE Toos>Internet option>Connections dialogue. This will at least get you back onto the web which you can then get extra drivers from.

Can you identify what drivers / dll’s are bad?

If it’s for a device, try de-installing the device, and removing all trace of it from the Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware dialogue

The next time you re-boot XP will auto detect it and re-install the drivers / dll’s.

If the above doesn’t work take Boom’s advice and format and re-build.

If you’ve got your original CD’s for video cards etc it’ll be easy.

But if you haven’t modified any of the internal from when you bought it, every driver you need should be on the HP provided CD’s.

If you have changed the internals and don’t have the driver CD’s, go onto the web now, whilst you still can and download all the drivers for your stuff and copy them to a CD or Stick.

Then go for it… And good luck…

BTW, all the above information is subject to all waivers under international law and you can’t lock my a$$ out of WT if it all goes bad…

PARTION YOUR HDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get a program called Partion Magic.
Partion your Hard Drive.
Format C: (with all your drivers/OS)
Re-install.
Have all of your other crap safely tucked away in you partion and now use you computer.
Access new drives as if nothing happened!

Seriously. PM has saved my bacon! But slaving your HDD into another comp to save the data and then formatting is what I do at work. But if you have a NEW HP computer your going to have to find someone with another NEW HP or Gateway Comp. The majority of them have SATA HDD's. No more pins on the Drives. It makes for a faster drive but a pain if you don't have 2 brand new comps. And don't trust the Geek Squad. They get $280 for a house call, only to tell you to re-install (or something to that nature)!

All those who suggest partitioning your drives are correct.

This is how our corporate PC's and Laptops are set-up.

We have a system partion for the OS and installed programs, a recovery partion which contains a 'Ghost' image of a good build and a data partion for all the users crap, sorry data...

The idea is exactly as Weasel and Goose say, if your OS get nuked, you re-install and off you go. Your data is still sitting pretty on the seperate partition.

The difference being because we have a hidden copy of the OS on the HDD, the local IS geek doesn't need any CD's.

But remember having partitions on the HDD won't save you if the HDD goes phut.

The only way to protect against that is to do what Weasel does and copy the data to another drive in another PC.

Or, if you've got a few bucks spare, get a disk controller that can handle RAID configs.

Install two drives, set up a RAID 1 array into one logical volume and then partition that as Weasel suggests.

A RAID 1 array mirrors everything written to one disk to the other. If one disk fails the puter keeps working as if nothing has happend.

You then power it down, replaced the failed HDD re-boot, re-mirror and off you go again.

It might sound expensive and complex, but it isn't a Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA (supports up to 4 HDD's and will also do RAID 0 Striping) costs about $125 and and you can get 200gb SATA drives for $100 a go.

So for less than $350 you've got a bullet proof storage solution.

But you might need to fit a few more cooling fans <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>...

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...

I have two HDDs a 200gig and a 160gig, the 160 is in the puter case but the power and SATA cables are left unattached. Every once in a while I open the side of the case, plug in the other HDD and copy "My Docs" over to the second HDD. It is safe from power or data problems ( power surges, viruses ) and is there whenever I need it. If the main HDD fails in any way I can restore from a partition on it and then just plugg in the 2nd HDD and copy my personal stuff back over.

OK, my drive came partition with C making up the largest portion and D holds the recovery portion of my programs. What do I need to do? Do I need to download the partition program?

Fender,

Before you do anything, back up as much of your stuff as you can.

I think what Weasel is suggesting is to use partion magic to create a new partition on your HDD to allow you to back up your stuff into.

This will mean you'll end up with three partitions, C:, D: and the new one. Copy your stuff into the new one and then you can run the HP recovery utility to re-build the C: partition.

I've never used partition magic so I can't help with it's operation. But treat anything that performs real time low lever HDD manipulation with sensible caution.

Do you have a CD-ROM burner? I would still take a copy of your really critical stuff and store it well away from you puter in case it goes FUBAR.

I do suggest a second HDD if you can get away with it. Best thing you can do. Because just like 44HP said if you only use 1 Hard drive and it crashes (aka. Poo-poo, no more worky) your SOL! If you can still use your comp, try to do a system restore to a date that you know the comp was working correctly. If that doesn't work..post again and I'll see what the next step should be.

It's still on topic cause I KNOW she has seen someone use a computer!
I'd like to RAID her I/O port but hey back to helpin Fender.

HDDs are fairly cheap and you wouldent need a HUGE one just for back-ups. How many drives do you have already ( CD, Floppy etc ) you may be able to just drop one in for close to nothing, certainly less than that $79.95 fee.

Thanks Boomer. I havent done anything yet. I am still recovering from surgery on both feet at the same time. It seems Vicodin in not a bad thing after all. Once I get healed up a bit and the fog lifts I will try to sort this thing out. For now it works well enough to stay on line.

Well maybe we can exchange secrets Fender! I can give you computer advice, and you can tell me how you came to having surgery on your feet (I'm currently dealing with some jacked up dogs myself. Hoping the correction doesn't go that far!).

Hope your feeling better soon!

Well I guess it' ok to hijack your on thread. I had a tailors bunion repaired last year on my right foot. Surgery went well and the it fixed that problem. Fastforward to now and I needed the same surgery on my left foot also. Meanwhile my right foot developed a neroma (sp!) inbetween my third and forth toe. A neroma as explained to me is a nerve that is irritated all the time. Mine hurt all the time. Walking, resting, driving it did not matter it hurt. So old sawbones says lets fix both at the same time. I can not believe I agreed to it but here I sit. So far so good, not to much pain.

OUCH!!! I have feet as flat as a board. I guess that caused my "heelspurs". Pretty painful. The ligaments/tendons on the bottom of my feet tear throughout the day, everyday, ALL DAY! So I feel your pain.

Sorry about the thread hijack!
