Calm down Snipe, Race Gal, I'm not talking about who got poll position at Lime Rock this weekend, I'm talking about no less than 3 articles in the liberal rag that passes as our daily newspaper in this area (The Hardly Courant..wait, that's the HARTFORD Courant) this morning, as well as a vignette on one of the news reports last night.
Before I begin my rant, a caveat and a warning. This could be construed as racist though that's not the intent and hopefully won't earn me a visit from the collector of souls.
I'll start with Susan Campbell's column, it's on the front page as a sub headline. She begins with some background on who she's interviewing and continues with; "Why are so many of the faces they see on television, the ones of victims crying out for help from rooftops, the ones on the ground with dead and dying behind them, black?" She goes on to say "It certainly looks like racism from here. Rapper Kanye West certainly thought so, when he went off-script during a televised NBC benefit concert Friday night and said "George Bush doesn't care about black people". Personally, I don't care what rapper Kanye West thinks and I don't care what Susan Campbell thinks. I do care that the response to this has been shameful but I feel it's more ineptitude than anything else. The 2000 census puts the demographics in NO this way; the city is 67.25% black and since NO is listed as the 3rd poorest city in terms of per capita income, it would stand to reason that the people you see are going to be black. Maybe that's too simple. The other thing that tightened my jaw was an interview with two of the victims of this tradgey. The first was with a woman who appeared to be in her late 30's, early 40's who, when asked why she didn't leave, responded with "they don't give us no jobs, we gots no way to get out, jus axe anyone here...". Anyone else see a problem with that statement? Lady, you want a job? First, stop speaking ebonics and secondly, nobody gets "given" a job. You obviously had a place to live and you certainly don't look underfed so you must be getting your money from somewhere. Anyone want to guess where that money's coming from? The other interview was with a 16 y/o holding her newborn. I'm certain her job with full medical paid for the childbirth <cough, cough>. More simple math. She was probably 15 when she became pregnant. Want to break the cycle of poverty? At 15 years old, keeping your legs closed might be a good start (crude, I know). If you can't do that, condoms work..tell your partner "no condom, no nice-nice"..they're free at many schools and every free clinic. Grab a handful, keep them with you and learn how to use them.
The lack of government response had absolutely nothing to do with racism so spare me that crap, I don't want to hear it. End of rant.
