From the BBC website.

BTW, it's worth following the link just to see the picture of the plane with the airlines name on it.

On reading this, I wasn't sure if I should laugh, or be outraged...

Football fans fake air emergency

The authorities are still deciding whether to fine the airline
A chartered plane carrying nearly 300 Gambians faked a fuel emergency to land in time for the West African nation's game in a youth tournament in Peru.
The plane should have landed in the capital, Lima.

However, when the fans realised they would be late for the game, the crew radioed the Peruvian authorities to say the plane was low on fuel.

The plane then made an emergency landing in the northern city of Piura, where the game was taking place.

Dedicated followers

The Gambian fans, dressed in national colours, were allowed to disembark and watched their team win their game in the Fifa championship match.

However, their celebrations could be dampened by the reaction of Peruvian officials.

Thinking the plane's problem was real, the Peruvians had declared a red alert and scrambled the emergency services.

The Gambians' plane has now been impounded, and the airline could face penalties.

The fans/passengers dont run the plane, if they had asked the pilot to fly into a cliff would he have done that? Fine the airline till the stockholders scream bloody murder. If I'm not mistaken in the US damages as the result of fraud can be treble the actuall amount of damage( the cost of scrambling the emergency equipment ). Let the airline decide what to do with the pilot.

A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink!

That's what I meant about the don't know if I should laugh or not.

On first reading it sound like some sort of stupid movie plot with the splif smoking laid back pilot and the passengers colaborating to get to watch the game in time.

But when you realise the gravity of what they did...

ATC having to juggle all the inbounds to make space, could have easily triggered another incident.

And having been in an ATC generated near miss (125mtrs seperation, two planes on the same approach to the same runway), I wouldn't be to keen to be in another one.

Haven't they ever heard of the little boy that cried wolf (BTW that's no relation to Snipe's little pigs post)?

LOL, sounds like something i would do.

The pilot shoulda just dumped some fuel on approach so his gage was almost on E when he landed.

LOL

And is that the sort of responsible attitude we want from the High Admin of the board..?

No wonder you go about putting "Wanted Dead or Alive - nah forget the Alive bit" posters on the head of an innocent hoglet...
