Does anyone here compete? I have competed both in bullseye and combat style competitions. Of the 2, I prefer combat, and have shot with IPSC, and IDPA, and another club down in AZ who shot completely on steel targets. While it has been awhile since I have competed, I'm looking at getting back into IDPA, even to the point of starting my own club up in WY if I can get support of my local range club.

For those who don't know, (it baffles me sometimes), IPSC is the International Practical Shooting Confederation, and while it started out as a Practical Shooting match back in the 60's and 70's, it has since been taken over by the Race Gun Crowd.

Race gunners are a crowd who tend to believe it's better to shoot fast and worry about accuracy later. They invest thousands of dollars into weapons with massive ammo capacity, holographic sights and holsters that are little more than magnets hanging on a belt. I've competed against these types before, and it's amazing how fast they shoot, and how fast they miss, and how much ammo they consume inorder to hit the same targets I did with 1/4 the amount of ammo.

IDPA is the International Defencive Pistol Association. They are what IPSC started out to be. You have to use handguns that are pretty much basic in that they would be a pistol and holster combination that you might actually carry for personal defence or duty. You have to have a shirt or jacket that conceals the weapon, and you must take cover when reloading or clearing malfunctions.

Bullseye shooting is all about accuracy and allows really long time limits on shooting. While it really develops the basic shooting fundamentals, it really doesn't develop the practical and tactical shooting skills required for combat or defensive shooting situations.

As a combat arms instructor in the AF, it was always my goal to teach the skills for both accuracy and survival in a gun fight. I used to tell my students that you have to slow down, and develop your accuracy before building speed. My 2 favorite sayings were, \"Slow is Fast, Fast is Slow\" and \"You can not MISS fast enough to win a gunfight.\" So, my personal favorite is to shoot IDPA.

So any other competitors out here?
