On servile forums I’ve been telling people the A-10 is not LGB/GBU capable and that got me thinking so I have been going through my old photo collection and came across this. This Hog is carrying a Paveway II but what is that on the other pylon? Looks to me to be a camera pod of some type but I thought I would get your opinions on the matter.

This is #13 production aircraft and so the photo must have been taken in the late 70s or early 80s and I know today’s A-10s have no capability to control a LASER or TV pod unless this aircraft had a T-2 mod on it or something like that. What is your guys thoughts on this pod, camera or some type of test laser pod?

my hog book has a photo from that same flight, but from almost directly underneath. With the slanted nose glass, I'd say LASER or an early FLIR pod.

This is a very old picture of the Hog, probably late '70's is my guess (1975 model). The pod is the laser pod that used to be carried on the A-7, sorry that I can't remember the name. We tested it for possible use on the Hog. I would guess that the bomb is a Paveway I, since Paveway-IIs didn't really hit the field until the mid-80's. It would be very hard to tell the difference anyway. They are almost identical except the Paveway II has the capability of setting different laser codes (on the ground).

A-10s are certainly capable of carrying and releasing GBU's and we are currently flight testing the Litening II pod.

I was reading that post, thinking this is some good stuff. Then, I would read one of his "editorial inputs" and say WTF? I was going to ask how much European Hog experience he had, but now I know.
