I am a huge plane enthusiast, USAF and Russian planes mainly. I don't know much about the A-10 other than what my father (Ret-USAF)told me about it as a child.

I have three questions:

First, I recently discovered that the A-10 has no radar whatsoever. While this seems like a good move to avoid BVR missiles, how would you find ground targets? I mean, would you have to visually confirm the target or get a vector to the target from an AWACS? How do you know if there is a target-of-opportunity that you may be missing? Mainly, my question is how would you find them?

I have heard amazing things about these planes. I have seen pictures of A-10s with skull & bones all over the side of the hog, showing how many tanks they dusted.

Secondly, I have heard of a maneuver called "The Warthog Stomp", which is apparently a type of A2A maneuver that many Mig pilots seems to be scared of, making damn sure that when trailing an A-10 to stay just inside IR missile range. What does this maneuver consist of? I am really curious on this one. I would love to see a ground role aircraft rip apart another aircraft.

Lastly, does the hog typically carry AIM-9 A2A missiles, just in case? That is the only missile I can think of in current use that can seek without radar. Granted, I don't know much at all. I'm just a punk kid! =)

Thanks for everything guys.

You amaze the hell out of us civilians.

Jes

Hog drivers can use the Mk1 eyeball, some can use the Litening FLIR pod, and they can also drop on a grid supplied by a third party.

Never heard of that. I'd be interested to know if such a manuever exists as well.

Yup, 2 AIM-9.

I have heard of the Stomp also, but only from the mouth of airshow narrators. I have never heard a pilot mention it. Primary flight school teaches you that a straight wing aircraft turns within a much smaller radius than a swept wing aircraft. Turning radius also decreases as airspeed slows. With this in mind the the A10 with its low speed and large straight wing should be able to turn inside of any faster swept wing jet down low where it operates best.
Anyone ever flown an A10 in DACM against a Lawndart or Eagle down low ?

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Haven't heard of it, but doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

This is oversimplified, but turn rate decreases and turn radius increases at any speed above OR below the optimum corner velocity for a particular aircraft. There are charts that show us what speed corner velocity is with a certain configuration, at a specified altitude, and with given atmospheric conditions. I won't get into more specifics, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out an F-16's corner velocity isn't the same as an A-10's.

Flown against Vipers a few times. First time was at the RTU, or A-10 training school. He had external fuel tanks, decided to slow down and try and play by my rules...I have some great footage of him wallowing around at 160-180 knots, attempting to guns jink while I guns track him. Latest was out over the ocean, in a declassified jet (it was going to an airshow later in the week). No RWR, no chaff or flares, and AWACS couldn't put their coffee down long enough to give a BRA call worth a damn. Next thing I know, we're still attempting a radar missile defense, and I hear, "Fox 2, southern A-10, right-hand turn..." I had expected them out of the sun, but we were at 8,000' MSL and they converged on us from above 30,000'...very hard to pick up an F-16 without a bit of help. He timed the missile out, and called it a "Fox 2 kill." Oh well, good training for them.

Yeah what he said!I was going to try dissimilar ground combat with my coleman versus a taxiing A10. I figured I could throw a screwdriver or something at him if I could get off a good deflection shot.
Thanks for the clarification and feel free to oversimplify.<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
