Looking at some recent photos of Hogs (including one landing at Fairford 17/7/03) I notice that they seem to have tinted or certainly a darker shade glass on the windshield glass than the main canopy glass.
Any reason for this?....I don't recall them being this way a few years back.
Trivial I know, but just curious.

The only reason is aging of the plexiglass.

If you are talking about the center windscreen, it may be due to the night vision mod.
The center windscreen was replaced as part of the mod. It does have a little tint to it.

I even noticed it on the pics on the East Coast Demo page, it has a definite tint.
As for the ageing of the plexiglass, the Hog in the American Air Museum at Duxford England has a windshield which has 'misted up' white in appearance in the 10 or so years it has been there.

Its the whole windshield, particularly the sides I am looking at, check this pic, it shows it up well.

When I worked on the A10, all of the birds had the same thing. I thought that there was a inner film that was used to help reduce glare. The F16 has a similar "Tint" to their canopy. What you see in this picture (as I see it) is not a defect in the side windscreen. When a side PNL was defective, you could see glazing (Up close) in the glass and this at times would also appear as a White haze. Most of the time you could let a plane fly with an acceptible amount, as long as it did not interfere with FWD vision. In this photo you can clearly see through into the HUD area.

The "tint" that you see on a lawndart is actually an extremely thin gold layer.

and that gold layer has reportedly reduced the F-16s head on RCS by a whopping 40% !!

Perhaps I should have qualified that a bit more....."an extremely thin gold COLORED layer". The composition is not for public disemination by myself....lol... Horrido, if you have information on what it is thats cool <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> but as for me....."I'm sorry Senator but I can neither confirm nor deny that rumour"

BTW, about the windscreen tint...it's because of NVIS and helps reduce/stop "blossmings" when munitions hit within the field of view of the pilot. If he/she fired a mav and it hit a target in front of him it could blind him.

The canopies and windscreens are not tinted, they just get that way over time. NVIS and RCS have nothing to do with the canopy or quarterpanels in the Hog. The center windscreen was changed in the mid-90's with the NVIS modification, but it is actually clearer than the old center panel was, and easier to see through than the old one.

"and RCS have nothing to do with the canopy or quarterpanels in the Hog" Odd.....no where did anyone say that the "tint" in the A-10 windscreen had anything to do with the RCS on the hog. Quite frankly all I did was relay a message from someone in the know.

Thanks for posting my message M&M. Coach, the side panels (and center) ARE tinted (no not the canopy) and it is because of NVG, I verifided it with the ES at the SPO today!

The process used in the begining to make the NVG panels (all three) reacted with strong light to turn them brown. The center panel is made (now) using a new process which only turns the panel a slight blueish tint and they were changed-out with newer ones first. The new process is being used on the side panels now and are being changed on an as needed basices.

My bad. I'll take it as truth from the expert. Like I said before, the tint comes with age, it's not put on the plexiglass that way. As Dice said, it is a reaction of the coating from the sun. And now days, Hogs spend a lot of time sitting in the sun.

M&M, I was lumping two threads together when I combined RCS and NVIS. I'll be more clear next time.

Not a problem Coach, a lot of people belive it to be only the sun doing it. We are starting to get the new side panels in so now it will harder than ever to tell the difference, some will be brown, some will be tinted blue, and if they look at old photos they will be clear. Drive the non-A-10 people crazy trying to figure that one out!
