Man, did this ever bring back the memories! Tallil was the starting line for BC, and KC. ( Note the KC tail shown ). Now it's the homes of the 74th. What this story didn't tell, is the fact that long before anything was ever "set up" on March 26th, all of our personnel were sleeping in HAS's (Hardened Aircraft Shelters), on the ground, in the dark, with absolutely nothing but a hole to ....well you get the idea, and a rifle in hand. A-10's and special ops, living in the dirt and defending the perimeter. ONLY THE HAWGS were tough enough to do this. BARE BASE? During March 26th, there wasn't a base, but we fixed that!

We all arrived on the same day. Some Via C-130 at 300ft AGL with an A-10 escort!! (me) and some left the night before and traveled all night in a convoy, down an unsecure road, riding in trucks full of JP-8. about 1 week later, Col. Dobbins, also an Active A-10 pilot, took command from Lt.Col. Kennedy.
On a side note......All those stray dogs were taken out pretty quickly because they were running all over the runways/taxiways and causing trouble at night when you couldn't see sh**! They didn't mention the Big A$$ rats that were running about too!!

I recall a Few ov10 Deployments were the first Week was the Varmit hunt. I think I personally shot over 20 Ferral Dogs in Thailand. the local villagers were more than happy to take them off your hands too. And i must admit Dog aint all that bad either.

having to carry a flashlight, tree beater and a burlap sack Collecting snakes is a mofo too. no matter what you did the little critters was always somewhere in my Plane. It really made me appreciate flying a Dart later on. No Snakes, No deer or Cows on the trail you call a runway A waterbuffalow at 70 Knots is not a good site to see crossing your path, Thank God for Garret Turbo props and STOL

Front seat in a helicopter. The one reason I joined the service in the first place. Should of continued on Naval Air in the Marine Corps. Word of advice. if your ever offered Interservice transfer. RUN!

My Dream Goal has always been and will be "Air medical Helo Pilot" I was hopeing to get some good training and ops experiance in the rescue and Pave Low-Hawk community. To be applied in the civillian Air medical Field. I like helicopters waaaaay too much. I envy their mission.

Somehow I believe the term is "Did the recruiter kiss ya before he fucked ya?"

We had an air med Life Flight facility here in town untill a few years back. They had a real nice S-76. I have always thought that was a sweet ride for a chopper.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

WELL BY SEE WHAT YOU GUYS DID GETTING YOUR FOL'S GOING,THE A-10'S FIRST IN HISTORY WENT SMOOTH.
I WAS PART OF THE GROUP WHO SET UP THE A-10'S FOL AT KKMC IN NORTHERN S.A. IN NOV 90.
WE SET UP THE BLADDERS,HOT PITS AND MAINTANCE SHACK ,LATER ON THE PREFAB RIVETMENTS WENT UP. THE ONLY THING RUNNING AROUND WAS THE FORGIEN WORKERS AND THE FRENCH FORGIEN LEGION TROOPS.
WE HAD ONE SMALL VAN AND A DUCE AND HALF TRUCK. MAN I LIKED RIDING IN THAT THING.

ALOT OF JETS TURN THERE DURING THE 1ST GULFWAR. WE REALLY DIDNT HAVE ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS.
