LONG-RANGE SECRET Boeing researchers have fired a demonstrator weapon that they will offer for the U.S. Joint Common Missile competition. Details are lacking, but they said the missile was fired from a shore defense system tripod and it flew more than the 16 km. (9.9 mi.) required for a helicopter-launched design. The JCM is expected to replace many current missiles, including Hellfire and Maverick, and threaten hardened bunkers as well as relocatable and moving targets such as tanks. The Boeing demonstrator used an advanced rocket motor developed by ATK. Previously researchers had tested a tri-mode all-weather seeker.

yeah I saw the pic, it's just a mod of Hellfire at leaste as far as the airframe is concerned.

Really, nothing different, can you post the pic?

I was wondering what it looks like.

the pic should have been with the story you posted. I dont have access to Av-Week anymore but yeah it was Hellfire painted redish orange and slung from an aluminum looking test launcher about 6 ft tall(the launcher) at about a 20-30º up angle.

Isn't the warhead on a mav about as big as an entire hellfire?

Mav is a lot better for hardened command bunkers and such...much bigger warhead.

It also has a lot more range.

Yeah the K model has I believe a 135 lb warhead. They are hell on Suburbans.

The mav has a longer range, larger warhead, and better sensors for finding and locking onto targets from longer slant ranges.

The AGM-65A/B/C/D have a 150 pound warhead and the G/K have a 300 pound warhead with a high-end (K) CCD seaker.

I would have thought that the bigger warhead would be because the missile was desinged in the 60s(50s? help me out here) and a larger amount of explosive was required with the current technology(power of the explosive and the stuff for forming the shaped sharge). The Hellfire is smaller becuase they gas jet that does the work is formed more efficiently, requiring less explosive. They just kept the size as technology pregressed, rather than discard a design that works so well. What Horrido said makes sense though, as I'm pretty sure the navy uses it. Another trivia tidbit to read up on. Do they have an air-launched version of the LOSAT yet?

thier are anti-ship versions of Hellfire as well. Mav has around double the range of currant Hellfires. The Air Force once looked into a Nuke warhead for Mav!!
My stuff says the A/B/H have the 130lb class shaped charge warhead,
the E/F/G/K have the 300lb class blast frag.
The main problem with Mav seems to be it's rather slow speed and it's large size wont fit into interior bays.

Two warheads are also used currently: a shaped-charge for armor and a themobaric-type for bunkers/buildings. It is in that fact where I would see this new Joint missile doing the job of the two missiles it's replacing.

Anyone ever seen/played with the A-10 3-d model on CNN's web site (http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/weapons/3d.models/index.html)?? Download the plug-in then fire some missiles off the Hawg. Won't compete with LOMAC, but it is enough to keep you amused for at least a couple of minutes!

The Air Force accepted the first AGM-65A Maverick in August 1972. A total of 25,750 A and B Mavericks have been purchased by the Air Force. The Air Force took delivery of the first AGM-65D in October 1983, with initial operational capability in February 1986. Delivery of operational AGM-65G missiles took place in 1989. AGM-65 missiles were employed by F-16s and A-10s in 1991 to attack armored targets in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. Mavericks played a large part in the destruction of Iraq's significant military force.
