WARTHOG FLIES IN FOR SERVICE: Dollar-wise, it was a small military contract that brought the first A/OA-10 Thunderbolt II fighter jet to Lockheed Martin's Aircraft & Logistics centers here. But what it possibly means for the future of Lockheed's Greenville operations had David Posek, the division's president, calling it a "milestone" Wednesday. <u>Lockheed had just given the U.S. Air Force A/OA-10 an exterior paint job and was preparing to send it into the wild blue yonder today.</u> It was the first of 10 aircraft scheduled under a $2M contract - minuscule compared with a maintenance pact worth potentially $434M for the Navy's fleet of P-3 Orion aircraft the Greenville division landed last year. But it marked the first time in Lockheed's 20-year history in Greenville that a fighter jet had flown in for service, and Posek said it could mean more jobs over time for one of Greenville County's largest employers. Little left-over GWOT monies and after OIF/OEF and all the other "small" conflets the A-10s have been involved in the planes were looking a little frazzeled!

Hey Stress if I am remembering correctly, you work for Lockheed ? do you know if that happens to be the mod center at Donaldson Center in Greenville South Carolina that thay are referring to ? I am just curious because I used to fly out of there a lot when I was in school in the late 80's.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Lockheed Martin Aircraft & Logistics Centers and the Donaldson Center Commission opened a new four-bay maintenance hangar at the Donaldson Center Industrial Air Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.

The 107,000-square foot facility, which includes an 84,000-square foot hangar and a 23,000-square foot annex with associated support space, is able to house four large multi-engine aircraft, such as the C-130 cargo aircraft or the P-3 maritime surveillance aircraft. The Greenville County Council approved a bond issue in 2001 to fund the construction of the $8 million hangar.

"This facility expansion will allow us to build on the tremendous success our aircraft center has achieved in recent years," said David Posek, LMALC president. "The hangar will provide us the facility capacity necessary to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the government aftermarket aircraft business."

Lachanos Architects designed the hangar, and Morris Construction Company built the facility. Engineering on the project was performed by W.K. Dickson.

LMALC's Greenville Aircraft Center now has hangar space for up to 33 aircraft. Since 1984, the company has expanded its hangar space from the original 17 aircraft bays at the former Donaldson Air Force Base. It also built a $12.4 million aircraft paint facility at the Donaldson Center in 1999.
