The M61 was used initially becuase the GAU-8 wasn't available for the first test flights. Something else yo umight see in Dice's photo is the MERs, which are no longer flown on the 'Hog.

I've been told the gun pod(I seem to remember it being GAU-3, no matter) was made, because they wanted to replace the A-10 with an F-16 equipped for tankbusting. Needless to say, it didn't work. We still have the A-10, and the day it leaves will be a sad day.

BTW, i have no problem with hazing, but i think Frag is a bit too young to take it the right way.

As for Frag, Dice has forgotten more about the Hog than you will probably ever know. He's been in the US Air Force longer than you've been alive. Probably a lot longer.

Gifted, I was just pokeing fun at Frag with my comments because he stated he would "look into it". I'm the HQ/ACC A-10 maintaince (and avionics now) Liaison at the A-10 Depot and his comment struck me a funny so I asked him to "let me know" what he finds out . Just an inside joke..not a very good one but I smiled when I wrote it!

Oh God... a 30 mil hanging from an A-10's pylons? I've seen the gun pods, but they aren't ever used. They do come in 20 and 30 mil though. Personally, I'd like to see an A-10 firing a 30mm from a pod hanging on one of those tiny little pylons. I wouldn't want to be in or near the aircraft, but I'd like to see it. That pylon would be jettison it's self right off after a burst or two.
