These ugly dents on some A-10 noses - are they only caused by tanker booms during aerial refuelings? Or are they also caused by the GAU-8/A Avenger cannon? And: Is there any routine to remove such dents by Hog maintainers, like in case of cars? |

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder... They're caused by the deceleration g-forces as a result of the aircraft slowing down while firing the GAU-8. Coach |

SP's that Fall asleep on the flight line while driving a Dodge patrol Truck, It makes a Nasty Dent and Breaks the Nose Gear Door linkage too. Hey Mac, Maybe JJ should talk to \"Woody\" and ask him \"How he Pulled the Dent out of the Nose of his Jet that that Turkey Buzzard Made?? I think he went to Napa and bought one of those \"AS SEEN ON TV \" Fix a Dent Tool\" to fix it And Bondo? I think its a tool called \"DEPOT\" Level ![]() Goose |

I have my scars from the F-117. I've been told tanker booms cause some of them. |

I thought those were from the 30mm rounds going trans-sonic as they exit the barrel causing small sonic-booms which act like a hammer on the nose. As I understand it these small booms beat on the nose day in and day causing the dent to grow with time? |

No action is required for the dents behind there. We won't fix them unless it is REALLY HUGE or cracked. They don't get banged out- that section of skin is replaced. But like you said EVERY A-10 has them. So what we had to do for the last ORI (that we failed anyway, so all the extra work was for nothing) was make a \"dent book\" and have every jet mic checked and measured and documented every single ding. Talk about ridiculous. |

You know, sort of like the way they ID whales by the markings on their tails. |

Contrary to popular belief, the A-10 does fly faster than some species of birds and it is caused from bird strikes. Note I said some species, additional damage can be found on the tail of the aircraft caused by the birds (esp. falcons) that fly a faster than the A-10.... It's has also been reported to be caused by low flying powerlines |

One of ours in the 358th TFTS at DM back in '79 took a small bird right on the muzzles of the gun. Bird guts all down all 7 barrels and a good amount plastered around the gun bay. That was the nastiest gun system R&R we'd ever pulled. ![]() |

Ice Pirate That was some type of hawk that went down the gun. I use to have a pic of that birds foot hanging on the load gate. The gun bay was covered with bird bits I found a Ducks head and neck on a TER one night at England AFB |

A Hawk?!?! I'd been told it was a lot saller, but that does explain the amount of goo inside. I heard it was really ripe by the time it made it into the gun shop for them to clean and clear it. ![]() Amazing how tough that bird is. I caught a Hog on De-Arm EOR one day that had hit a Suguaro Cactus up on a ridge at Gila Bend. It'd torn away the Sarboard Wind Fence clean. Nothing left but the bolts and washers. It'd also left a green smear down the side and under the starboard wing, and there was a chunk about the size of my head stuck in the main gear on that side. Took me and my partner John about 15 minutes to get it and most of the needles pulled out of the tire. I was amazed it hung on through the landing roll until we tried pulling it out. Man, those needles sunk in deep! The pilot, one of the IP's I think, said he'd come close to hitting it a few times before, but always managed to slip past just over it. He said it was now about 10' shorter than it had been. ![]() Just one of the reasons I love them so much I guess. |

We had to make a dent book too and had pics with dimensions in the back of the forms for ORI \"eyewash\". They can be popped back out quite nicely though while your in phase and the gun is out. Low pressure on the air hammer from the bottom and voila! |

I'll never forget when I was ACC on 0165. It had just come out of the paint barn. Looked great! Came back from one of the first flights after coming out of the paint barn with a bird strike in the right leading edge, about where the slat is, if I recall correctly. They had to take the wing off to fix it. I know I wasn't popular with some of the folks in B-flight then, because I had already put in for leave, and so I wasn't there to work that jet. Talk about torn: I didn't want to leave someone else with the task of working that jet, but I'd already put in for leave... No easy solution to that conundrum. ![]() |
