Post subject:  Estimated Class A Mishap at Moody
Pilot ejected after plane (79-9141) caught fire after takeoff. He was admitted and released from the hospital. The plane came to rest in the infield between runways, emergency crews rushed in to treat the pilot, extinguish the aircraft and a grass fire it ignited.

Good to hear the pilot was safe. That is the most imported thing about this news.

5/10/2010 - MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- An Air Force A-10C pilot assigned to the 23rd Wing ejected from the aircraft during takeoff at approximately 4:58 p.m. today at the south end of the Moody runway.

The pilot was transported by ambulance to South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Ga., for medical evaluation and is currently under examination.

The aircraft came to rest in the infield between the Moody runways.

Moody emergency response personnel were dispatched and proceeded to the accident scene. The Moody Fire Department extinguished the aircraft and grass fire.

The aircraft incident is still under investigation. Additional details will be provided as information becomes available.

Wow, I am glad I didn't provide more details...but it's a good reminder that there are folks who aren't members (but are in other ways, if you get my drift) that are watching this forum. Be careful of what you say on here (myself included)...

Reminds me of the bird watchers along the fence at Bentwaters. :roll:

I remember when I lived in England...driving to Mildenhall you had the spot that was set up for the watchers along the road....I'm sure we'll have some kind of safety meeting about this our next UTA down there.

Good friend of mine for many years...experienced Hog Driver, too. I'm very glad to see he got out OK.

141 was a Tiger Shark jet back in the day.

I hope Joachim has a boating accident someday soon.

Whilst I agree that JJ is an idiot with a disturbing propensity to rock the boat, I am actually grateful to many of those Bentwaters 'birdwatchers' who, brandishing camera's, captured life at RAF Bentwaters when it was a living breathing base, seeing the place now, its hard to believe it was once 'Hog Heaven'.
The Bentwaters Cold War Museum does a fine job of rekindling peoples memories, and introducing younger people to the activities of the former airfield through its displays and photographs........many taken by those 'birdwatchers'.
I'm glad they were there.

Most times, \"birdwatching\" is a harmless activity, but there are times when that is not the case.

Case in point; when the Weasels would launch out of Bien Hoa, the birdwatchers would let the north know not to light them up with radar. The north knew exactly how long it would take for a flight to get to Hanoi so it turned into a useless mission. On the other hand, when the F-4's would launch, again, reported to the north, the SAM sites would have a field day.

Fair point and a good example, I was just concentrating on the Bentwaters example.
At Bentwaters and indeed any base, if any real threat by the notebook/binocular brigade was felt, access to that area could have been denied. The Bentwaters spot was accessed by a small lane which could have been easily closed off.
During the heightened alert status post 911, the Lakenheath CO had a road closed off near the base, not sure if it still is.

It was during the Cold War,but those guys were harmless, 'Boris' would have been more sophisticated in his approach.
