Seeing that an A-10 has shot down a helicopter, but no helicopter has ever shot down an A-10, I just don't see much of an argument here.

 myself and 3 JGSDF pilots debated this quite a bit, we even have some flight profiles set in the sim suite. One of the pilots was a chief IP at ft. hood for 3 years, and also 15 years in the apache and testpilot for the japanese Apache program (US ARMY CW3)
His comment was simple... I need terrain. at altitude im dead. i can use the gun but only in a beam/flanking shot, but the apache gun cannot track and hit accurately... I tried it in the sim as well it was pretty tough... the LG hellfire cannot hit targets moving above 110 mph, I know this for a fact when i designed the GA predator system. The hellfire seeker is not designed for high angle boresights. it is set up to dive to a target that does not present a dynamic aspect point of reference. 2nd problem is Hellfires lack of manueverability. A2A Sidewinder, even match, first eyeballs/ first shot. |

I disagree that both aircraft with AIM-9s is an even match. The Hog's relative speed difference dramatically changes the AIM-9's envelope from each aircraft to the A-10's advantage. I agree first sight gets the advantage, but the A-10 can remain completely outside any Apache weapons envelope while searching (assuming good weather). The Apache's gun is just dead weight in this scenario. Hellfire's are not much better. Only shot the Apache would have with either weapon is really head-on or tail-on. Any crossing angles and the gun/Hellfire is pretty much off the table. I'm not going to call you on the 110 MPH figure, but the Hellfire is real slow with real small fins...I doubt it can hack a 100 MPH target on the beam. The gun's muzzle velocity and rate of fire is also not conducive to shots against airborne targets...it is designed as a suppression weapon with a lot of dispersion. The worse the weather, the more the Apache has the advantage. |
