I remember working this when I was still but thought it died, I guess not. Converting an A-10 into a storm chaser...

Why would the A-10 be the airframe of choice to do this instead of the C-130 that already does?

Price, turn time, able to fly through small shorter lived storms...just to name a few I remember from working on this project.

Flying without a gun?!?!? :o I think they'll need to add in some more ballast plates, at least one or two.

Have you heard any more about the Fire Hogs program?

Probably filled with a nose-load of WX gear/electronics. And a gun camera! :D

NOAA has been using falcons and there is a fleet of c21s doing it also, The light business jets are not structurally able to handle the loads that some storms produce, the C130"s are used for long duration flights over a vast multi state region, Hurricane hunting etc.

One of the gripes from the tactical side of fighter community is that the Weather shop is always full of shit. Maybe this is a way for more flight time vs having a weather day.....

Storm Chasing A-10's? Heck Yes! They can fly out of Small Air Strips , Longer periods of time and the "Dive on them with a Couple of MK-82's to see if that could break up the Storm? Hey its an Idea.

I heard about this from one of the AFETS techs at DM. Sounds like it'll be awesome. Supposedly coming with some built up and reinforced frame structure. It'll be cool to see what it comes out as. I don't think the MK-82 to the storm will work but what do I know about storms. I know it would awesome to see though.
