Look at this crap!

"The air base immediately sent an A-10 aircraft to Asadabad. It strafed the area with 2,000 rounds from its 40-mm guns to try to flush out the enemy attackers. It was not known whether any of the attackers was hurt or killed"

2k rounds? 40mm?

Unfortunately, it was in response to the death of a US soldier.

Don't get too outraged Weasel,

It was 2 A-10s. The caliber of the gun is a common misconception to the general public. Both aircraft emptied their guns. No other ordnance dropped. And the soldier's death was not in Asadabad, it was well south, in Paktika (near Pakistan). Asadabad had the rocket attack with one injury.

hey guys when operating in an area where armor is less likely to be encountered is there a different ammunition load carried or is everything DU. If not I would hate to see the out come of man versus DU.

Sometimes political and tactical considerations require a different ammo load. I don't have any personal knowledge of what they are using in Afghanistan, but I would not be surprised if they were using HEI only. You only kill a person if you hit them directly with API. The HEI explodes into many 30 grain pellets. A tactical burst is like putting 200 grenades in a relatively small area. A HEI round is also more effective against soft-skinned vehicles. API will just put a smooth hole in the vehicle and not stop it unless it hits a critical part, but HEI will destroy many parts.

Training rounds can be used in combat too -- especially in Urban situations where there is great concern about collateral damage.

HEI only in Afghanistan right now. That's some fun flying, but opportunities to drop are few and far between and only getting worse. Just got back from there last week.
