04/08/03 - OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM -- A coalition A-10 Thunderbolt II went down near Baghdad International Airport at approximately 2:15 a.m. (EDT) on April 8.

The pilot ejected safely from the aircraft and was recovered by coalition ground forces near the airport. The pilot is reported to be in good condition, according to officials at U.S. Central Command's Combined Air Operations Center.

Details on whether the aircraft was shot down or crashed due to mechanical or other system failures hasn't been determined at this time according to CAOC officials.

I've got some more details on the incident;

The A10 was shot down by a SAM, pilot ejected, was rescued, and is now back in the coalition's hands.

Any word on who's tail number it was?

Good news about the peelot... However I strongly suspect flying just isn't the same after a combat ejection.

Mark, as far as I know all A-10 units use the 131 pod and hang it on 1, that's why this photo looks strange, maybe it's just the prospective but that looks like a 119 pod on station 11.

Goose didn't you guys carry 119 on 11?

Some units are still flying 184s.

Spang uses 131s, but for some reason likes to load them on station 11.

I've been looking at the pic again, thinking it might be a DRA.
It sure looks like a POD... but it also appears that a/c doesn't have
a DRA or AIM 9s. Then again, the Iraqi AF has been a total no-show, so maybe they're saving the space for air to ground ordnance...

Regarding the pic: The attribution is to Reuters. While they may slant news from time to time, I don't think they'd doctor or misidentify a picture. (Unlike the LA Times...)

Maybe another case of news useing a computer to "get the shot" they want. I don't realy care as long as the A-10 gets it's picture in the papers and all over the net! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I HAVE A QUESTION THAT HOPEFULLY SOMEONE CAN ANSWER.THROUGHT OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM,WHEN THE NAVY,ARMY AND MARINES LOST THEIR AIRCRAFT THE DOD GAVE OUT THE UNIT ID,CARRIER,ATTACK SQUADRON ETC.

WHY IS IT THAT THEY HAVE YET TO GIVE OUT WHERE THE DOWNED A-10 WAS OUT OF,EXAMPLE AEF NUMBER AND SO FORTH.

I AM ON A FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP AT ONE OF THE ANG A-10 OUTFITS THAT IS DEPLOYED TO SWA.TOMORROW NIGHT WE HAVE A MEETING AND I KNOW THE QUESTION WILL BE BROUGHT UP,WAS THAT FROM THE BASE WHERE OUR PEOPLE ARE AT.

I AM GRATEFUL THAT THE PILOT IS ALIVE AND WELL,AND TAIL NUMBERS ARE SECONDARY,BUT AS MANY OF YOU KNOW WHEN YOU LOSE AN AIRCRAFT FROM YOUR OUTFIT FOR WHATEVER REASON,IT HAS A STRONG EFFECT ON THE ENTIRE UNIT.

THANKS FOR LISTENING

Not all A-10 units carry 131's, only USAFE and some Guard. That picture is probably a 184, which looks exactly like a 119 (same body, different guts).

looks like a 184 to me, and I'd say the the picture is accurate.

I watched this live feed from Al Jazeera, Abu Dabi, and Lebanon broadcasting last night.

lighting and everything is the same. I would bet that they are leaving the AIM-9's off, since there is zero air threat at the moment.

Any of the active duty units and PACAF units I was with had the 184 pods.
ANG & Reserves units I was around had the 131's
Was never at Spang so I don't about them.
Cheers

I checked into this a little more and there are two 184 pods, a two band and a three band model, the two band looks a lot like a 131 pod in size and shape (I guess I was confusioning them with the 131) and the three band looks like a 119 pod.

PACAF was the only ones showing using (this may have changed) the three band pods so maybe they had them shipped to the Gulf for use on the aircraft there.

YES WE DID ,

I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT PICTURE.I HAVE ????'S IF THAT PICTURE HAS BEEN "DOCTORED"
LOOK AT THE PIOT TUBE,AT THAT ANGLE THE AIM-9'S SHOULD BE SEEN OR PART OF THEM.IF YOU CAN GET THAT MUCH DETAIL OFF THE ECM POD YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PICK UP PARTS OF THEM
SECOND,IF THAT SAM WAS THAT CLOSE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE PARTS OR TRACES OF HIM POPPING FLARES OR THEIR TRAILS.

I THINK ITS FAKE

BUT THATS FROM A GUY WHO'S BLIND IN ONE EYE AND CANT SEE OUT THE OTHER

The three band 184 looks like the two band, except it is about 30 inches longer and weighs about 200 pounds more. Only PACAF carries the 3-band 184 right now. I don't know if they have decided to not carry the AIM-9s, but you can't tell from that picture. And lastly, that is a flare, not a SAM.

If I recall correctly, don't the Bulldogs carry 131's as well. Also, around here, we carry pods on 1 and DRAs on 11, though I have seen pics here at WT of on of ours with a pod on 11...

Goose, the flare is from the A-10 to decoy a missile, it trails away from the jet as it is turning (in the picture).

Raven, the DRA can be carried on 1 or 11, or both simultaneously (2 or 4 missiles). The ECM pod can be carried on 1 and/or 11, but only powered on one or the other at a time. Which pod is carried depends on what theater and what threats.
