Great site I've always been an amateur A-10 fan.
Just wondering if it was true that the A-10 actually slowed down when the gun was fired. I've heard this somewhere and figured someone here would know.

hi jeffksf,
as far as i know this is true.
I think it depends on how long you push the fire-button

I read it takes 5 knots off your speed, when firing 1-1,5 sec.

Now go ahead experts, correct me!!!

Jeff,

Well, Physics says yes...But how much...The 30mm projectile, (lets assume we are using the PGU-13 High explosive round which weighs in at about a pound, 378g), is moving out at about 3350 feet per second. The muzzle energy on one round down range, which exerts an equal and opposite force on the Hog in the form of recoil, is 145,271 foot pounds of energy...Ouch... Now that is instantaneous, but let's hold down the "button" for...oh...for 2 1/2 seconds or so and let 100 rounds go down range. That is a sustained reverse thrust for 2 1/2 seconds of 145,271 foot pounds of energy and has a definite effect...There *IS* a built in compensation.

The attacker must vanquish...The defender has just to prevail.

Let the physics major give you his answer, I failed Physics II in college, and had to retake it during the summer with the distractions of beer and broads in Daytona Beach. I won't get into how I managed to pass the second time around, lest I digress from the subject at hand, but I know a Marine F/A-18 pilot who is flying off the Constellation now who was there for part one and part two of Physics II with me. He says the JDAMs fall off the jet just fine even with his jarhead understanding of physics.

Anyway, from having actually squeezed the trigger (which, for the first time, was like a vibrating matress gone haywire, an elephant farting, and an orgasm all rolled into one) I can say I never noticed the airplane slow down. Vibrate like hell and peg the G meter, yes (it doesn't over-G the jet, just shakes the G meter like crazy), but slow down, no. Especially on a high angle strafe, with 30 or 45 degrees of dive, the jet usually GAINS airspeed (even I understand the physics behind that one). On a low angle strafe, say 5 dgrees, I park the throttles in 'fly' and never notice the jet slow down any. Longest burst I've put through it was two seconds, in case you were wondering about that.

So who knows, maybe I'm out there defying physics all the time. I never much liked physics anyway, always in the way of Happy Hour and free tacos at Rio Bravo.

Thanks for the quick replies folks!
Anyone know where to get more video clips?
I got one from the westcoast demo site (i think) but now it isn't coming up. I know they had a couple more on there.
Yeah, I downloaded the clip with the A-10 straffing the ground a couple times, I can't stop watching it!

A2M,

When the adrenelin is pegged, who notices a couple of knots...The built in compensation is the wing nut, sittin' in the poop seat pushin' the button...I gave up the game when we were still using Super Sabers for ground support...my job was keeping 'em in the air so when the tacos and suds were goin' down smooth, I was most likley still at the barn makin' sure you came home to have some more tommorrow. (chuckle)

The attacker must vanquish...The defender has just to prevail.

Go check out http://www.gotfootage.com and go to airplanes/military and search for A-10's. Lots of cool short clips.

No, but my dad was and a real good friend of mine is. Just always had alot of repect for those guys. They (and the 101st) do alot of crazy stuff. However I do volunteer time to help out with the Armed Services Blood Program. Spent some time down at Fort Benning a few months back. A detatchment was there and got to hang with them a bit. Really cool bunch of guys.

I don't know why it's not working? If you manually enter the address it will go there. Sorry!
