The guy in this pic is obviously inverted, and the caption says he is avoiding anti-aircraft fire. But I've heard that Hog pilots prefer to shoot the gatling gun inverted, as it's easier to aim. Any truth to this rumor?

Yes he is inverted, he is probably sucking seat cushion (I would be), and attempting to avoid EVERYTHING the gomers are firing at him (or her). Looks like the pilot just punched off a flare, and is maneuvering as he sees fit to keep the bad guys from getting a good guns solution on him. I'm sure you've seen the footage on t.v., with Hogs constantly maneuvering...moving target is much harder to hit.

I've never fired the gun inverted, but thanks for reminding me to get back into the books to see if there are any G-limits when employing the gun. Can't say that the gun would be easier to fire inverted, since you'd have to push negative Gs unless you just wanted to hose bullets over an area, and then you get into other operating limits. Last time I was inverted like that firing something similar to a flare I was hanging upside-down from a reinforced ceiling fan at a strip club. Speaking of which, you don't happen to have access to a brass pole and reinforced ceiling fan, do ya Poke?

Relating to your story about the green switch, I had forgotten that the O2 switch was green. The same regulator is in the A-10, but I never took notice what color it is. I just do my PRICE check and make sure it works. At ENJJPT, I flew with a Dutch IP who didn't bother having you turn off your own O2 supply. When you screwed up, he grabbed the hose between the mask and the CRU-60 and pinched it. Instantly no air. Let's just say I learned to hold my breath for extended periods of time!

I thought the "shooting inverted is easier to aim" story might be a bit of a rumor. I love watching the footage of the A-10. It's awesome, although I can't imagine being inverted so close to the ground. That's gotta be a rush! Ah, well. I guess I can get excited about my 45* steep turns and auto-pilot features... Sorry, no ceiling fan, but I think you can buy a strip-pole off the internet. Don't remember where I saw it, but we were searching for condom hats at the time. Come to think of it, how did we get away with that on govt computers?

Man, I think I would have punched the guy if he pinched my hose! As it was, he was a good-natured guy and it took me a second to figure out what he was talking about, so then it was pretty funny. Just a creative way of saying "shape up!"

Snipe- none of that now!

Goose: Don't believe they are safety wired these days...I'd have to take a second look, though. Sounds like an FO hazard to me, though

Strafing while inverted can be disorienting. Don't try it at low altitude, though. Mr LASTE can handle it, but you might not be able to.

Ours weren't safety wired. In fact we were supposed to check the ON/OFF function as part of the PRICE check. Red switch is Norm/Emergency and the white one in the middle is 100%/mix.

It is prefered method when low-Medium to come off of a target bank hard and padlock the target as your bombs hit, maintain a beam for defensive reasons and observe the target area or find a new target and pull over inverted bank to reingage. Really depends at where the target is in relation to the apex and radius of the turn.

The positive G pitch out turn is a tighter turn, also because of the stabilator throw percentage. last thing you want to do is to decide suddenly to negative g into a target that is blocked by the nose of the aircraft. I dont think the Wing King is going to buy the idea your busted capilaries in your eyes was from a Rough Night of Habusaki.

Eyes on target = weapons on target sooner.

Boy this is funny because I was just talking to a retired army colonel who was convinced that the they HAD to fly inverted to fire inverted. he also though that the A-10 was a 2 seater and the pilot had the HUD on his helmit, no he'd have to believe me!!

ya, I gathered that from the context of the other replies. It just sounded like there was a funny story behind her sig. and I just got curios.
